I love grannytoad, she rocks for granny toad xxxxx. I think Mrs d you are out of order with your snide comment, you are saying that the likes of granny toad and hsk's mom and all the excellent genealogist ( prof or am) have achieved it by cheating, tut, tut, tut. That's bad.

I have no clue how they figure these things out. It's a little orange thing that just popped up maybe six or eight weeks ago with no explanation. I have been listed as a top contributor in a category where I only had 2 best answers...and only 10 answers altogether...while at the same time I was #2 in another category for best answers and didn't get any mention there. One day Rust Skipper, who leads in several categories in Arts & History, just fell off all the boards like they deleted him. He was just as suddenly back again. Whatever the algorithm they're using to figure it out, the calculation doesn't take much into account that the rest of us find important...like whether the answers even match the question or are just snarky remarks that irritate people. Go figure!

I asked this question some weeks back and believe me it has nothing to do with best answers. It would appear that how many questions that are asked on the shortest time possible seem to be the key.

I'm not taking away from the top contributors as some of their answers are specialist so fair doo's. However, some of the answers given are appalling.

So like everything in this world if your face fits your in.

The level depends on how many points you have. The contributor status depends on the average answers you have given that have been chosen as best answers.

I would imagine a person who has a lot of witty comebacks to questions gains points as far as their level but loses on their best answer average. However, I have noticed in the genealogy section, people who give snotty or smart alec answers get a thumbs down from a lot of people. I believe that effects your level.

A Top Contributor is someone who is knowledgeable in a particular category. Each Answers user can be a top contributor in up to three categories.

Edit*
Just checked a few top contributors out . The least best answers for one of them was 165 . I can't find out how many you have to have in a certain category.

I don't know how I came to be a top contributor but I am, I honestly don't know how it's decided or why the orange things are awarded, it just appeared without warning.

I'm fairly recent to the site as well with not all that many answers (or best answers), but have tried to be helpful. I would guess it is based more on the number of answers in a specific period of time, not the total number of answers.

Some people are clever and spend all day on this site.
Others have a posse of friends that give them best answer regardless of other contributions.
Others cheat. (I don't know how, but they do).
