I got a couple of programs that automatically startup when windows xp loads up. The programs don't seem to have any option to disable the startup feature, is there a way to manually make the programs not startup with xp?

there are lots of ways.

1) first you can look in Start -> Programs -> Startup, and delete all the stuff in there.

2) if it's not in there, u can go in Run -> msconfig
and in the resulting window, look in startup tab, and remove all the useless lines from there. of course this is not that usefull, and annoying since it will pop up a dialog box every time u boot windows, saying that u modified the boot sequence. if this doesn't help or don't wanna deal with the pop up dialog box, u can also try the next step

3) Run -> regedit
This is advanced stuff, and be sure what you are looking for, BEFORE messing with the registry.
Usually, when u install programs on your PC they go in Local Machine -> Software ->Microsoft ->Windows -> Run
There are more categories, such as RunServices, RunOnce, ... and so on. look in there for the program you wish to remove and delete ONLY that key. if u're not carefull what u delete in here, you can mess up the computer permanently, so create a backup of your registry first by selecting File ->Save as ... in the Registry editor BEFORE deleting anything.

Hope this helped.

Have you tried to disable these programs through the msconfig utility. If not try this. Click Start and then Run. In the run box type "msconfig" without the quotes. This will open the System Configuration Utility, Click the Startup tap. Now remove the check mark from those programs that you do not want to load with windows. When you have finished click Apply and then OK. You will now need to restart you system.

If you want to remove them from startup, but not delete the programs from your HD, I suggest you:
· click Start
· cl Settings
· cl Taskbar and Start Menu
· cl the Start Menu tab
· cl Customize
· cl the Remove tab
· you will get a list of programs and files on the start menu
· be careful here - don't mess with anything of which you are unsure
· find the program you want to remove
· click on one at a time
· click Remove

Goto www.sysinternals.com and download the 'Autoruns' utility from Utilities index. U need not do any installation and it's free and you can manage all startup programs from there.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

go to the above path and delete the shortcuts to the programs your DON'T want to start up. Then, I THINK you should also delete them from your profile, so substitute ALL USERS with your login.
