I have had knee pain for years and finally went to the doctor. They took x-rays and saw a 2 inch lesion in my left knee. Now I'm scheduled for a MRI. What do they hope to see in the MRI? Also what is the chances that this is cancer or something else?

Something called a lesion is tissue that is damaged or altered, so the term applies to a wide array of injuries. In the knee, it usually means the cartilage has been worn down or it is beginning to become hardened by calcium deposition.

Most likely it is degeneration or tear of a semilunar cartilage.
