Muslims, Jews and Scientists from Europe created a cosmopolitan society of peace and mutual co-existance.

Islamic scholars of Religon (Mullahs,Imams,Ulama) were also scientists since the Quran encouraged the Muslims to look into science to see the power of God.

Muslim and Jewish scholars along with some Heretic Christians or "enlightened" scientists created a "JEWEL" in Europe.

Science, Mathematics,Astronomy, Philosphy etc. were discussed and studied with all three faiths living in harmony and peaceful coexistance.

This islamic attitude to science, mathematics and learning was so foreign in Europe that it was considered heresy and blasphemy.

This got the Catholic Church so UPSET they hunted down all the Muslims/Heritics and converted them by force or killed them.

The Church was so fanatically against free thought and scientific research that they blamed the Renaissance on Islam.

In revenge for undermining the awesome power of the Church (and planting a seed for Europe to emerge out of the Dark Ages) ,the Pope killed or baptised by force all the Muslims (and Jews) in Spain.

Then the Pope and Church along with loyal Kings started the Crusades to make sure Islam would not reach any further into Europe with their "heretical views".

The Islamic view of One God, no original sin, and the belief that there should be NO Religious hierarchy and NO organized church was a total slap in the face of Christiandom.

-----------

“The Renaissance of Europe did not take place in the 15th century. Rather it began when Europe learned from the culture of the Arabs. The cradle of European awakening is not Italy. It is the Muslim Spain.” (Robert Briffault, The Making Of Mankind)

“The Christian World came to wage crusades against Muslims but eventually knelt before them to gain knowledge. They were spellbound to see that Muslims were owners of a culture that was far superior to their own. The Dark Ages of Europe were illuminated by nothing but the beacon of Muslim Civilization.” (F.J.C Hearushaw, The Science of History.)

“The greatest crimes, the greatest “sin” of Mohammed in the eyes of Christian West is that he did not allow himself to be slaughtered, to be “crucified” by his enemies. He only defended himself, his family and his followers; and finally vanquished his enemies. Mohammed’s success is the Christians’ gall of disappointment… He did not believe in any vicarious sacrifices for the sins of others.” (Edward Gibbon, Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.)

If Jihad really meant "kill all infidels" then Muslims would have wiped out all non Muslims in the Middle East during their 1000 year rule of Jerusalem and 700 year rule of Spain. On the contrary these were the ONLY times all three faiths co-existed in peace and Islamic universities attended by Jews and Christian were a catalyst for the Renaissance in Europe.

During the Crusades rumors and misinformation were spread about Islam to rally the Christians into fervor for the battle with the “Heathen”. That fervor gave birth to some of the most regrettable crimes in the history of Christianity.

On the contrary, when Salahuddin retook Jerusalem and fought against an external evil (the lesser Jihad) they FORGAVE all the Crusaders who had massacred men, women and children. It was a "struggle" (greater Jihad) for the Muslims to conquer the internal desire for revenge and retribution.

Even to this day, Muslims hold the keys of the Holy Sepulchre (Christianity's holiest Church in Jerusalem) because it brought peace between all the Christian factions.

Only the atheists have the intellectual honesty to acknowledge these Islamic accomplishments :

Your question, "How did the Muslims create such a cosmopolitan society in Spain which sparked the Renaissance ? ", was totally unanswered in the context of your posting.
Your posting seems to be more an attempt to lift up Islam, put down Christianity and to extol the virtues of the Muslim faith.
That is not a bad thing but it does not speak to the question you asked.
The truth of the question is that it was not the "Muslim faith" as much as the Ottoman Empire that enabled the Arab world to experience their "Renaissance" long before Europe.
The teachings of Mohammad truly helped in that with his teaching to explore and to expand knowledge but the Empire of that time allowed for a more genteel and balanced acceptance of other views and beliefs.
After the fall of the Ottoman Empire (and during), the corruption of the leaders began to have its effect.
Since that time the Arab world was thrown back into a type of "dark ages" because knowledge and reason was being replaced by religious zeal, furvor and extremism. Just like the time of the Catholic trials, and burnings of books and people so too the Muslim faith suffered at the hands of ideologs who only wanted their way to survive.
IF God is God (whether of the Muslims, Christians, or other) then HE can preserve HIS Word and HIS Way - regardless of what man might do.
While all religions have their bloodshed and wars, it is God Who will end it.
A dead infadel cannot make the choice to follow God. An infadel who sees, hears, and watches the love of the followers toward one another and toward others will make a choice to follow.
There is peace and prosperity when reason prevails, but war and destruction when that reason is replaced with idealism and fanaticism of any kind.

As an atheist, I respect some of the initial contributions to science that the Arabs made. However, several of your statements like " Pope and Church along with loyal Kings started the Crusades to make sure Islam would not reach any further into Europe with their "heretical views" are blatantly wrong and show a very skewed interpretation of history. I'm not saying that the crusades were right or called for, but that the motivation for them had very little to do with Islam - religion was just a handy excuse.

Islamic Law is extremely strict when it comes to dealing with the society and elements of the society in a manner that befits the dignity of the human beings involved in that society.

Meaning, whether they are Muslims or not, everyone in that society gets a fair share of equality and recognization of basic human rights.

Such an attitude has ofcourse weened over the years, especially by the beginning of the wahhabi movement in Saudi Arabia, and the political corruption of most of the other Arab countries. This has definitely put a shadow on the face of the religion that lead people to make startling discoveries in the middle east.

Very interesting subject, lots to talk about here. Especially about the way Muslims have lost their great heritage over the course of many years.

A very valuable piece of advice was given by an American Muslim scholar in the past few years.

He attributed the fall in knowledge, and the spread of ignorance in the Muslim people to the way the Mosques stopped preaching about science, and preached only about religion. His discovery, is not without proof. For the end of the Golden Era of Islam, coincides with a time that the scientific knowledges were ignored in local mosques.

The Quran says all knowledge is obligatory.

What kind of life lives on religious knowledge alone?

The emphasis on the importance of science in our lives needs to come back to our mosques. ASAP

Actually, it was the fall of the Byzantine Empire that sparked the Renaissance. When all of the fleeing Byzantine scholars and historians fled to Europe, they brought with them a great influx of ancient greek and roman knowledge. This inspired Europe to bring again styles of greek and roman architecture, art, and styles of literature
