My granny told me to poke a hole straight through raw hamburger before putting it on the grill. This prevents the burgers from shrinking. It actually works! The hole will close as it cooks and the burger will still be a nice size!
My mother always said that a watched pot never boils. No truer words have ever been spoken! She also said to never trust a skinny cook. Hmmm.
But back to food - Mum told me to slam the cake/bread/cupcake batter on the table after it's poured into the pan. It will get out the air bubbles. If I ever got too much salt in a soup, she suggested I cut a potato in half and add it to the soup. It will absorb the salt and not alter the taste of the dish. At the end of cooking, I can just take it out. And finally, she gave a baking hint: when working with dough, always chill it beyond the recipe's recommendation. The haet from our hands makes the dough too malleable too fast...make sure it's cold enough to do what you have to do before it goes soft.

I had handed to me (a few years ago) my Grandma`s old cookbook - all handwritten recipes. It was handed down to my Grandma by her Grandma.
I also received her old scales and weights: ¼oz up to 8oz.
I`ve had many fun times in the kitchen cooking stuff, had some great results and some complete disasters lol.

My Grandmother told me that if I start cooking breakfast before my family gets up in the morning then they will always be happy to eat whatever I have cooked and I won't have to play fry cook to my family.

This ALWAYS works. LOL

To make your biscuits rise well, don't turn the cuter as you cut, just push down and put the biscuits in a super hot oven then turn it down to 450 or so to cook them.

Yes, my grandmother would grind dark roast coffee beans and put them in an old coffee kettle and boil the hell out of it; that was the morning coffee!

Grandma said, always start out on low heat. You can always turn it up, but if you burn it, you're out of luck
