I was a chess master in my friends and school circle. I still love that wonderful game originated in India. Basic rulings on games as far as I know is that, they are all permitted if they are not meant for gambling and don't take you away from rememberance of Allah as prayers. Chess is not promoted because of its addictivity etc.

Chess is allowed, but three dimensional pieces are not, because you might be led to worship them. Islam forbids statues of humans or animals which cast a shadow. So the King, Queen, Bishop and Knights represent humans or animals and so are not allowed. I have personally seen chess sets ( Even those with traditional Staunton design ) confiscated by religious authorities in Saudi Arabia at the airport in Riyadh. In fact a very good friend of mine had his 300 dollar chess set taken from him and he never got it back again. But they do let you use two dimensional ones which will not cast a shadow.

Not if it's something like the Civil War chess set, because then the pieces are little statues of people, which would be idolatry. Unless you set up two rooks and...uh, never mind.

Yes, but all the pieces point to the miniscule Earthly bound mecca, and when you take a piece, you must say "die infidel"
