I am an avid perdator hunter, and have several guns. I have a .243 for my long shots, a shotgun with slugs for under 100 yards, and as the guy above mentioned, a 30-30 for shorter shots. I like to use the 30-30 for shorter shots rather than the shotgun, because for one, im more accurate with it, and its more fun to shoot. If you want to keep the pelt, dont use anything over a .243 becaus ethey leave a good entrance hole, and a bigger exit hole, unless you shoot ballistic tips, or a fragmenting bullet, or something similar. If i were you, id try to find a clearing to sit in that gives you 200 yards because they will more than likely see you first under 100 yards, and its harder for them to see you are long ranges. It can also be tricky getting them close enough for short shots because of them spotting or smelling you. Brush can also be tricky, because they are very quiet and will coem within 50 yards and you wont even know anything is there, excpet for the hint of squirrels barking, birds going cazy and other animals making tons of noise. Wear full camo-gloves, and face mask, and wear odor cover, and do everything in your favor for short range predator hunting.

The .22 Magnum will work well if legal to use in your area and you're not shooting at anything bigger. If rimfires are not legal then use a centerfire .22 like the .223, again if you're only shooting coyotes n bobcats. If you also intend to shoot deer use a .243 Winchester as minimum with the .25-06 or .270 as a better choice.

If its a first rifle I would stick with something in 270 or 30-06 just because you can get ammo cheap at walmart. Rifles in these calibers are easy to find used for less than $300. They will both do the job with less recoil then a magnum.

Coyotes are typically shot at much longer range, a lot of people use .223 or another varmint round. In your case with thick woods I think 30-30 would be more than enough.

I find that the 22-250 Caliber is a better choice.......There are some others like the 22 Hornet, 222cal, 218 Bee...These are best known to be used on Predators you mentioned......

The one you shoot best. Action type and caliber aren't going to matter much. If you're pelt-shooting, bullet construction is the most important consideration.
