I am interested in attending an osteopathic college, but I need help on what I should emphasize on while trying to apply. I have read that I need a letter from a current D.O., but I know none, and am having a hard time tring to get someone to hear me out. How does someone like me get my foot in the door? I am a "stand-alone" student, meaning my parents and their parents never made it past high school, so this is new to everyone. I need guidance and advice, for this is something I really want to do. I am currently working on a BS in Alternative Medicine in Tampa Bay, Florida, hoping to use that as a help into college. Any advice would be awesome and appreciated, and any reference would be heavenly!

Hello, Marianne. I am a DO and can answer some of your questions. It would be easier to discuss through email than this format.
Email me if you wish.

Look in the phone book for doctors that are DOs. Call each one up, and ask if they would be interested in having you volunteer in their office during the summer. Some colleges even have a program called an "externship" in which you can do this for college credit. This way, you get some experience, which looks good on a DO school application, you see what a DO's life is like in the real world, and you will probably be able to use the DO you are working with as a reference. Another option is volunteering in a hospital; they are always desperate for help, but you will be working with all kinds of health professionals, not just DOs.

Try this web site, http://www.osteopathic.org/index.cfm?PageID=ost_main
In the upper right corner in the mustard colored bar next to site map is a link to find a DO. I typed in my city and state and my DO along with three others in the area came up after the search.

We love our DO, he's amazing and I commend you for your desire to bring the practice of medicine back to the point of vocation above profession which I see in all the DO's i know.

Good luck!

I'm not a DO, but an a nurse; have been a patient of both. I have a thought. Through your PCP, who may (or may be) be an MD, ask if s/he can give you the name of a DO who can help you out.

Ask to meet the DO and even if it means making an appointment, it still might be to your benefit. MDs usually know of DOs through their practice. Both practice medicine, DOs, oftentimes (not always) more holistic in their approach.
