Yes, Hammurabi predates the 10 commandments. Also, I doubt Moses wrote them. He was a fighter, not a writer. :)

Yes The Code of Hammurabi predates the Jews by something like 1200's BCE. I think that Hammurabi's laws were codified sometime around 1700'sBCE. The bible is not the source of laws , morals, or even ethics. I one reads the bible they find that the god spoken of in this book is a poor role model for anytype of positive ethical view of the world. In the old testament this god condones murder, is silent on rape and even in some passages while it does not say rape per se it does say that virgins should be kept by the jewish victors as a spoil of war to do with as they saw fit.

Plus the 500 year is gap in between the two is even questionable. Because a date set in stone for the apperance of the hebrews and abraham is tentative at best. But, if you look at when these things were supposed to be written down the code of Hammurabi beats out the idea of god giving man laws by several hundred years.

But, I guess the "true believers" will attack that idea and say that their god had a hand in all of this. Some people just prefer to live in the darkness of ignorance rather than in the light of reality.
Read Man and his Gods by Homer W. Smith. It was published in 1952 and gives a good history of man and his belief systems and how they have all mingled together in the modern religions of today.

The code of Hammurabi was written around 1760 BC. The 10 Commandments were written around 1280 BC. So, yes, the Code of Hammurabi does predate the 10 Commandments.

Hammurabi's Code was written in Babylon in 1700 B.C. The Ten Commandments came about in 1300 B.C. Yes, Moses probably stole some of the ideas from Hammurabi. Hammurabi probably stole some ideas from other ancient societies, too. As time passes, each culture borrows ideas from other and changes them to suit their own needs.

Moses didn't wright the Ten Commandments, bud. They were written by God and given to him atop the mountain. I'm not going to lie, I don't know the answer to your question, but it seems to me that society has always looked down on murder, theft, adultery, and so on. Even as a Catholic, I would have a hard time believing that this was the first set of rules governing such behavior.

There were many laws published before the story of Moses was written. Murder in almost every society has been bad.

Sacrifice and war were not considered murder in most cases so even though the past was very bloody, murder was ususally looked down upon.

Moses didn't write the Ten Commandments - God did. Moses just delivered the message.

God set that law when Cain slew Abel. Adam and Eve knew the laws of God because they walked with God in the Garden of Eden and afterwards when they were banned from it.

God has always been the Lawgiver and His laws are the laws that we will all be judged by.

Yes they did. But that doesnt negate anything Moses said. Just because a message isnt eternally original doesnt mean its not true.
