Your husband gets a statement from SSA every year that lists all income that has been reported to them plus estimates of how much money might be payable in retirement or if he becomes disabled. These are only estimates but in my son's case his estimate was very close to what he's collecting.
You committed a serious error in waiting to file, however. You cannot be paid benefits prior to the original application date except in extremely restricted circumstances that do not apply in your case. In fact, for the first 3 months following the application you cannot be paid anything even if the claim is ultimately approved.
Once his claim is approved, the SSA will roll the clock forward 3 months forward from the application date and send you a catch-up payment that will cover you from that date through the current month. He'll then start receiving regular payments on your assigned payment date the month FOLLOWING the current month.
(Ignore the post above mine. He's a spammer, shilling for some useless prepaid legal money waster.)

Sorry for your troubles.
The social security people will evaluate his claim, and if they approve it, benefits will be based on his payments into social security, not his income immediately before the accident. No way to tell from your question how much that will be, but it isn't likely to be anywhere near what he was making.
You say he can't go back to his former work. If he's able to do other types of work, his claim won't necessarily be approved.
If the claim is approved, you can be paid back to when you filed the claim, not back to the date of the original disability.
See ssa.gov for more info.
Good luck.

You need to talk to a lawyer who specializes in disability. This is NOT legal advice.
You said that he can not return to his prior job, and thus will make a lot less per year.
You're working, but can't make enough to make ends meet,
Our compoany has many husband and wife teams. There was an article about one single mom who lived in a relatively poor states, but made over $100,000 per year. If he or you just made 1/2 or 1/3 of that combined with the tax savings of a home-based business, then it could help you a lot right?

However, I hear that it can take up to 2 years from when you file to get it started, and then you get the back payments. Expect to get denied on the first application.
You can talk to the Social Security Administration for some answers, but they can't give you legal advice either.
Was the accident job-related or of the job like a car wreck or fall?
What state are you in?
Lawyers are expensive. But if they think they can get him benefits, then many will take a 30 to 50% cut of the back payments, depending on what you can negotiate and the amount of work they need to do.
Tnational average rates is about $287/hour for an attorney.
There are over 1.5 million families and businesses with an average of 2.6 people per family who are sleeping better tonight by being a member with a family legal membership.
They have provider firms which get 1/3 of the dues each month if they give good service under their contract.
This legal coverage is like the American Automobile Associate (AAA) where you buy a membership in one state and get NATIONWIDE coverage and have help just a phone call away. With AAA you get up to 5 listed services per paid driver like towing, gas delivery, unlocking your vehicle, jump starting, flat tire changing, etc. The costs are PRE-PAID by your annual dues. Unless you get towed farther than your allowed towing miles, or get services not listed, you won't pay extra.
That's the same way with the PRE-PAID Legal Services family coverage.
Many listed valuable services are at NO EXTRA CHARGE to covered members and only a locall call or a toll-free number away.
Your coverage is NATION-WIDE with a network of referral attorneys if needed.
Just like AAA, some things are not 100% covered. If you had your motor or transmission fail, then you would pay 100% of the costs because that is not a listed benefit. That's only fair for the low rates.
With the legal coverage, you get at least a HEFTY 25% discount if it's not 100% covered. People get up the day after Thanksgiving at 3 or 4 AM to get a 10% discount for being at the door at 6 AM.
With this service that I've had protecting my family for over 23 years, you get a BIG 25% discount off an already discounted rate if you use the provider firm for that state, and 25% of the regular rate of a referral attorney.
There are many benefits in the six major areas of coverage, however the two benefits which you will like the best is you get UNLIMITED advance by lawyers for both personal and business legal questions to let you ask before you have them turn into a problem or a crisis. This includes legal advice by a $500 or more per hour tax attorney.
PLUS, if you get audited by the IRS for your personal tax return filed in the year you joined or years which you are a member, they will give you up to 50 hours before the audit and during the process.
PLUS you can also protect your increased assets from identity thieves.
To cover the family legal coverage it is just 86 cents a day and even less in some states.
