The entire point of life is to better one's self, and in turn, use that to better the world around them. Some people view a pursuit of knowledge as not only a bad thing, but in some cases, a detriment to society. Why?

Without the pursuit of knowledge (i.e., intellectualism), we would all be living in huts, banging on rocks to communicate. Because some people dared to think, society advanced, and was able to sever the umbilical cord from a previous era or belief.

What is it about the advancement of thought that scares some?

From the perspective of a Christian: The pursuit of knowledge in itself is not inherently wrong or evil...it is only when that knowledge puffs itself up against the revealed truth of God,that it is in error...The Bible states that some are "Ever learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth"....

Seeking Wisdom,is even a better goal. Knowledge without Wisdom is a recipe for failure.

The advancement of thought should always be scary to someone in power because that means there is a chance people will soon come to relies just how bad they have it. The less people understrand and know the easier it is to keep them in line.

Pursuit of knowledge is not a bad thing. But when you add the -ism to the base term, it is on its way to becoming a conceit, and then it is no longer a good thing, but just another ego manifestation.

Some Christians think intellectual advancement separates us from 'God'. My parents feel my college education is to blame for my spiritual searching. I was searching way before I ever went to college, there I learned WHERE to look and HOW to look.

they view intellectualism as a bad thing because bettering oneself means changes. These people (who view it as a bad thing) are simply afraid of changes

I agree with you. But those of whom you speak are usually amoung the sheep hurding themselves into church every sunday, or into moscs. Because, statistics show that the more one thinks, the more the delusion of dieties disappears.

Only 125 years ago, black people were being shot in America - because they could read.

Hope that helps.
