Some say Jesus is begotten, not created, by God, and both have existed forever in the form on the same being. How can one be begotten by the other yet live forever as the same being and be a son?

Jimi, okay if Jesus had a start, does that mean he hasn't existed forever?

Some of these answers are funny but seriously this is a clear description of what the bible is describing.
Jesus himself is a part of that incomprehensible Godhead. When God(the father)wanted to create He simply spoke it into existence. Jesus (God the Son)actually accomplished the act of creation.
This is the part that you want to know. Jesus created the spirits of all beings (angels spirit beings) and (humans fleshly beings) but Jesus himself was not created because he always existed within the Godhead. God the father describes their relationship as father and son because that is a description that we can comprehend it is obviously more complex. There is only one Jesus(Son) hence the title only begotten of God.

The word Begotten just means you fathered an offspring, a child. The word begat is a past tense of the word used in chronolizing generations such as first chapter of Matthew
Jesus is the only child or son God fathered no one else can make claim that they are the son of God

Revelation shows Jesus to be the first thing God created, thus when we read that Jesus is God's only begotten son, we understand that Jesus is God's only direct creature or creation.
Revelation of John 3:14 These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God (KJV)
Colossians 1:14, 15 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: (KJV)

It may mean only (fleshly) begotten, since many cults use that term, 'son of God' to describe themselves.
