I have a 12" 400W sub powered by a 400W amp ... 2 250W 6x9`s on parcel shelf powered by a 250W amp.
When I turn the sound on the headunit up above 20 (max 50) the sound is awful and distorted.
The amps are rated same as speakers ... I disconnected my standard rear speakers.
The sound was better with my standard rear speakers and the sub.
Any suggestions?

Ok I have 2 dials on each amp. One says low - max ... the other has frequency from 50Hz to 150Hz.
What frequency should the sub be at and same quetion for the 6x9`s?
Thanks

The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS coming from the source (CD player, etc.) to the input of the amp.
Here is a guide that will help you set the gain correctly http://www.datafilehost.com/download.php?file=6d26c621
You'll need a multi-meter (AC voltmeter), Microsft Excel and a way to burn an audio CD from an MP3.
If you don't have Excel, e-mail me and I'll send you a condensed version sparky3489@yahoo.com
Set the frequency to about 100Hz for the subs. The 6X9s can operate at much higher frequencies.

Power ratings are very misleading as there are no industry standard for them. the first thing I would do is adjust the gains on your amplifiers. Contrary to a popular misconception they are not volume controls. They meant solely to adjust them so that all amps in a multiple amp system reach full "clean" power at the same time. To do this, turn all gains on your amps all the way down. Then turn your head-unit up until you hear it just begin to distort, then back it down a little bit. Next, move on to the 6x9 amp and do the same with the gain on that amp. Repeat with sub amp. You can simply back the gain down on the sub amp if the subs become overpowering. Bear in mind that this is assuming that your amps and speakers are installed properly, meaning proper enclosure for the sub, correct gauge of power and ground wire, etc.

First of all, ignore "max" or "peak" power ratings. When you match speakers to amps, you should look at average or RMS ratings.
There are a lot of reasons why your rear speakers may be distorting. You may need to adjust the gain control on the amplifier; if it's set too high, the amp will reach its maximum clean output at a relatively low volume setting on the head unit. Also, make sure your speakers aren't wired in opposite polarity; ie, that you don't have the positive and negative terminals switched on one speaker. Make sure the speakers are mounted securely; I've seen speakers rattle because of loose mounting screws. Also, make sure the speaker cone isn't hitting anything when it's moving. If the speakers are bottom-mounted without a face gasket, then the cone may be striking the surface to which the speaker is mounted.
It's also possible that your speakers are damaged or defective.

maximum folk run it interior the direction of the door jams. in case you're experienced you are able to drill by way of your firewall, yet maximum basically run the flexibility twine interior the direction of the door jam. in case you look, you will desire to have the potential to run the cable up the driving force or passenger area door jam, under the hood, and into the engine bay. The cable will probable bend once you close the door so make effective there are no sharp pinch factors that should puncture the cable. wish this facilitates.

If the amps are made by visonik, boss, legacy, lightning audio, pyle, or audiobahn... your problem lies with poor, cheaply made equiptment.
