Currently, we have a partially finished basement was was done decades ago. There is asbestos tile which is intact except for several tiles that are missing in their entirety. We've been advised to either leave it as is or cover it up. The basement is pretty dry. We run a dehumidifier in the summer in case.

On four occasions, water has gotten in. Twice, after new windows were installed, once when the washer broke and once when the shower directly above leaked. We have since made all repairs but want to be realistic that we may get water again.

That being said, what type of flooring is the best for our situation? We are looking for something we can do ourselves, that will not get moldy or deteriorate if moistened. Perhaps something that is floating? Does that exist?

The room is an art studio and will be a playroom eventually. Any ideas from experienced homeowners and contractors?

Its a basement, its going to have accidents and fixups. Marble or Ceramic. Marble would be the best choice because if you drop something heavy like a fridge or washer/dryer machine, it wont damage it. Marble if you can afford it. Ceramic is the less expensive of the 2. Its expensive but its well worth it. It does not hold and collect water like stone tiles or other tiles. And best of all... it will last you for many yrs to come with water accidents also children's water color to hobbi painting.

you can lay down 2x3s on edge and nail plywood to it. crown side up and finish with an indoor outdoor type carpet you will just have a stepdown where the doorways exist and finish it off nicely or you could just go with an indorr outdoor typ carpet which is cheap and wont be a burden if it got wet it would have to be a vinyl type carpet so it does not absorb water .a floating floor such as pergo will warp if you have the moisture or water problem and if you go with the 2x3 idea use a underlayment first and pressure treated there ya have it easier said then done hehehe

Since your floor does get wet, I think it would be wise just to leave it untiled and put nothing on it except some concrete paint.
If you are artsy, paint a design for kids on the floor to play with later. I would go buy a large cheaper area rug to walk on and lounge around with. Not much money involved, and still a neat, clean area that is functional and appropriate for your needs. Easy to take care of and it seals the concrete.

We have basic linoleum.... We have a waterproofed basement that has in the past taken on water...and the floors have held up. You can also use the peel/stick tiles.. That works and you can change it if you don't like it.. I would stay away from wood laminate it would warp... I have peel/stick in the laundry room it looks good/holds up and is cheap....We have throw rugs where the kids play..that if they got wet wouldn't hurt to throw out.....
