She feels like vomiting, but it's really difficult for her to do so. Only a little bit comes back up, and it's usually mostly just liquid. Sometimes she goes to the doctor, but the doctor only prescribes medicine which she can't seem to swallow anyway (some pills: don't know what they are; she just throws the medicine back up).

Whenever she gets food stuck like this her condition seems quite serious. Her headaches are really painful, she has trouble falling asleep, and she can barely move around. It usually lasts 8-12 hours, until eventually she sleeps it off.

We thought it may have something to do with not chewing properly, or eating overly spicy food, or eating too quickly, or maybe even stress. But we're not really sure what the cause is.

The food seems to be getting stuck at the lower end of her esophagus, nearer her stomach.

Does anyone know what's going on? And whether there's anything that can be done to help her?

There are 2 things that could be causing your wife's symptoms. One is a stricture, which is a narrowing of the esophagus. This is corrected by having a gastroenterologist stretch the narrowing out. The other is a little outpouching of the esophagus called a diverticulum. This can be corrected with surgery. Both are only diagnosed by a gastroenterologist, and only if he does an EGD, which is where he puts a little camera down the esophagus. An EGD is painless. (She will be under a little bit of anesthesia.) Both procedures may leave her uncomfortable for a few days, but it is totally worth it.

Perhaps you should see a gastroenterologist and have him check her for a hiatal hernia. If the stomach is slipping up through the diaphram it would give the sensation of something being stuck and not going down properly. You say she isn't throwing up food, but liquid, so it would seem food is actually going down. The muscle at the top of the stomach ordinarily keeps the stomach contents inside, but if it slipped up through the diaphram, it's possible liquid would be able to slip through. You don't mention heartburn symptoms, so I'm not inclined to think it's reflux. That wouldn't be relieved by laying down anyway, that makes it even worse. I'm not sure what part the headache is playing in this, though perhaps that is just from the stess and vomiting. If she has the hiatal hernia, it's repaired with surgery fairly easily and straightforward. It will solve the problem permanently as well. So find a gastroenterologist, or internist if nothing else, or push the GP into ordering an upper GI series. Good luck

She should see a gasteroenterologist...they will probably do and EGD which is were they stick a lighted camera down the esophagus to view it and the stomach they may find a stricture where it is narrower and they would then preform a dilation of the esophagus making the opening larger. She would feel some discomfort during the procedure but will not remember the procedure because they will give her a medication that gives her an amnesia effect for that time period. That is what I would do it almost sounds like a stricture or a hernia in that area.

You have a great body. I am a very honest person and you look very good. You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. No offence to other people out there, but u look way better than them. u look gorgeous! I never eat junk food. I don't like it. I like chickpea salads, mashed potatoes, baked zucchini, French bread, etc. Honestly, when you start eating healthy, you will get into the habit of it. During my childhood, my mom gave me lots of healthy, nutritious food. I guess I got into the habit. Type in, "yummy fruits," into google images. Fruit doesn't have to be boring. Take a look at those pictures. You can eat low fat yogurt with strawberrys and just spice things up like that.

I have a family member that had this problem. They said her esophagus was too short and went in and stretched it. Go have the doctor check it out b/c she got to where she couldn't eat b/c she would choke or vomit.

She may have a hernia. This happened to my grandma sometimes and that's what she had. You may want to go to a stomach specialist, they're called a gastroenterologist, and have her checked out.
