Good question.
The history you have read, the history that many christians have read is not the real history of Jesus, but a "story", largely written by Paul of Tarsus.
The real Jesus, the historic Jesus was a member of a far more amazing bloodline, the oldest and most ancient priest kings of history- the only ones who may truly call themselves "divine holly (holy) ones".
He was of the House of Judah, in his veins flowed some of the greatest kingships and prophets and with the marriage of his mother and father he was the first Royal Sadducee and Essene royal child in history- the first true and unmistakable Priest-King-Messiah uniting all the factions of Judaism.
See:
http://one-faith-of-god.org/new_testament/apocrypha/jesus_family/jesus_family_0010.htm
+++An ancient war of good vs evil+++
Try if you will to ignore images of horned beasts battling winged angels and consider for the moment that a battle between the forces of good and evil have waged for thousands of years.
+++Jesus as the founder of the Nazarenes/Gnostics+++
Jesus and the disciples were the true founders of the gnostics and nazarenes.
See:
http://one-faith-of-god.org/new_testament/apocrypha/nazarenes/nazarenes_0010.htm
Unfortunately, the texts are hard to follow because they require a fair knowledge of the history/context of Middle East religious groups at the time such as the Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes.
In essence Jesus taught through the gnostic texts:
+ The god of the Old testament, the "jealous god", the "vengeful god" that demanded sacrifices, that demanded blood and war was actually satan pretending to be god.
+ The true God, is the father of all things, a loving universal god who would never display willing hatred towards any of his creations.
+ The Sadducee High Priests, the religious leaders hide behind white robes and words of holiness, but in fact were evil satanists who practiced black magic and human sacrifice.
+ The way to salvation is through self knowledge and the respect of all knowledge, not the promotion of ritual and ignorance of the double speaking satanists.
+++Paul of Tarsus and Christianity+++
Paul of Tarsus and the Sadducee Jewish High Priests formed the parasitic religion of christianity including the false scriptures listed as the "Bible", especially the New Testament. Paul hated women, hated them with a passion and considered them worse than slaves and domestic animals.
See:
http://one-faith-of-god.org/new_testament/apocrypha/founders_christianity/founders_christianity_0010.htm
So when Catholic apologists, pr agents and spin doctors say Jesus chose men and so the church follows his tradition, it is really Paul they follow.
And when christians quote the Bible that only men were the founders of christianity, they refuse to acknowledge the true teachings of Jesus in the gnostic texts and his demand that women be treated equally in all matters.
+++Jesus as the true Pharaoh+++
Unfortunately, few christians have ever heard that the official title "Son of God" was reserved in the ancient world before 500 BCE exclusively to Egyptian Pharaohs.
http://one-faith-of-god.org/old_testament/sources/son_of_god/son_of_god_0010.htm
Nor have christians usually heard that the title "Son of God" was used by Alexander the Great upon conquering Egypt and claiming right to be Pharaoh. That the Roman Emperors from Augustus for over a hundred years also claimed the title of "Son of God" for themselves and even had it minted on coins across the entire Roman Empire
See:
http://one-faith-of-god.org/old_testament/apocrypha/son_of_god_2/son_of_god_2_0010.htm
Nor are Christians familiar with the tale that Moses, was not Moses at all but Pharaoh Akhenaten and that the descendents of the High Priests that called themselves the "Sons of Zadok" were the true bloodline heirs of the Pharaohs of Egypt.
Yet in the Israel Museum is the Copper Scroll, one of the most sacred and important surving artefacts from Qumran (Dead Sea Scoll) onwhich is written in Greek the cryptic message "Akhenaten is also Zadok".
http://one-faith-of-god.org/old_testament/sources/copper_scroll/copper_scroll_0010.htm
Mary was Essene and a "Daughter of Zadok" the bloodline of the High Priests and therefore the true "Sons of God".
But if Jesus was to use such a title in direct challenge to the Sadducees and Pharisees of his day, this would be a challenge of epic proportions.
It would require a plan to somehow hide such overwhelming evidence that the Bible was a ficticious story. Could this be why the religion of Paul of Tarsus is so literal concerning Jesus being an actual God?
+++WWJD? What would Jesus Do?+++
+ Jesus has been continually mis-represented thanks to Paul of Tarsus for 2000 years.
+ He would hope that people who believe in him, would listen to his plea for women to be treated as equal and with respect in all matters rather than just follow whatever they are told by a religious organization with vested interests.
+ Above all that people who falsely claim to be speaking in his name stop.

He was a Jewish teacher who may have believed himself to be the Messiah - at the very least, his followers believed it. He seems to have expected that God's Kingdom (something like the end of the world) was about to dawn, and predicted that outcasts and "sinners" would enter it before the self-righteous religious people of his time.
There is a LOT more that ought to be said about how historians reach their conclusions and what differences of opinion there are about the authenticity of various bits of evidence as well as the fitting together of the whole into a coherent portrait. Read a book by a historian about Jesus - try E. P. Sanders' The Historical Figure Of Jesus, which is very fair and balanced.

Christ, in the last pages of Revelation in the Bible, called Himself the Bright and Morning Star.
The Book of Job also mentions the Morning Stars, when they sang together.
The spirit that lived as Jesus Christ was a Morning Star. The first Life our Creator created, (gave birth to). As there is no division in Spirit.
The Book of Hebrews says Jesus died the way He did
because that is the way things were done on the Earth. And the Heavens had to take on the same conditions, as all things are ONE.
Think of all the creatures of Earth that have died
violent, bloody deaths. This creates negative spiritual energies that block out the good energies that come from our Creator. Therefore, Jesus Christ had to die in the same manner, in order to purge our world of those negative energies at that time. To reopen the doors to Spirit for us.

Jesus is Yeshua, The Christ. The only begotton Son of God who came to Earth as a man, was crucified by the Romans at the behest of the Jewish religious authorities for blasphemy -- and thereby became 'the Lamb of God' sacrificed in atonement for the sins of mankind.
He said that He would 'tear down the temple' and 'rebuild it in three days' -- at the moment of His death the Jewish temple was destroyed in a earthquake and the partition between it and the 'holy of holies' -- that place behind the alter where only high priests were allowed to commune with God -- was rent from bottom to top.
Three days he arose from the dead thereby 'rebuilding the church' and now all may commune with God -- but no one goes to The Father but by Him.

He's the figment of the imagination of various groups of scammers.
The Jesus myth and legend is built on Horus and Mithras myths with too many similarities to ignore; from son of god, born of a virgin, disappeared till aged 30; birthday at the Winter Solstice 25 December and more I can't be bothered trying to remember - do research.

You have to decide whether you are going to believe the Bible is true, or if it is just a book containing lies, folklore, and partial facts.
If the latter, then the answer you seek is that he was likely just some guy.
However, if you decide you accept the premise that the Bible is true, then when it says that Jesus is the Son of God, that is who he is.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made...14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
Hebrews 4:14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Sure.
He is God, Who came to us in a body of flesh and blood.
He gives us the chance to get to know Him as He truly is, so we don't have to fear a sadistic "sky daddy".
He took the opportunity to learn, first hand, the trials and temptations human beings face.
He learned what it means to be mortal.
And He gave His human body to be the ultimate sacrifice, conquering death for us, so that we do not need to fear it.
Amazing, huh?
