Bribery. Get a chart and give him a gold star for every day he doesn't have his dummy. At the end of a week, let him choose a treat.
He's old enough to understand that concept.

Make something of a big deal of the next step up that doesn't involve dummies - make a big deal of where the dummy would be going - make firm note the dummy won't be back and follow through.
By the way spare a thought for the parents of finger/thumb suckers - they've really got it tough!

A friend of mine has started taking it off her son during the day unless he is sleeping, telling him he is a big boy and only babies need dummies.
She is going to wait for xmas or something to do the santa took it trick but as you have already tried that, see if you can replace dummy with a teddy or something

Make it a surprise. Tell him the dummy fairy is coming as his dummy is wanted for a brand new baby, and make a big production out of putting it in a special place and then make sure there is a lovely surprise waiting for him. It needn't be in the morning - just make a time when you think it will work. If you know there is something he would really like - such as a new Buzz toy or Superman/Batman. Just pick the right moment.

With my children i told them if they went to bed without there dummies the dummy fairy would come and magically turn them into a present my 12 year old still remembers it well he now knows there is no dummy fairy but was so impressed at the time that the dummy fairy turned his dummies into a pop up tent, it worked both times for me but once they agreed to do it all the dummies went into the bin and they never had another one. I hope this helps.

A kid should never have a dummy at 4. You should never of let it get this bad. Maybe swap it for a big toy that he really wants.

You should be more specific. Is it a pacifier? Is it a plastic toy? What is a dummy? A stupid child? Explain yourself!

go cold turkey on him. dont give in no matter what and hell soon get over it after a few days. itll be hard and youll have a few sleepless nights but in the end its worth it. my partner had to do it to his then 1 year old daughter and it was hard but in the end it worked.
good luck

my niece had the same problem.. letting go of her dummy. it got burnt in fromt of her and she still craved it. One day she was in shopping with her mum and dad in tesco's and she dropped it after that she didint ask for it again.
If you encourage them to dispose of it themselves or say its bad for them maybe it will help.... good luck!!
