The need is urgent.
Even if everyone drops their prejudices tomorrow to work on this, it will take years to properly co-ordinate the response.
No matter how different our opinions may be, or how we feel about each others beliefs, we need to come together, look each other in the eye, and see that we are all essentially the same, and that each one of us is just as important to save from climate change and it's impact as each other.

Acid..........denial of the evidence for humans have caused this seems on a par with denial of evolution to me.

Acid..........I'll post a few more later, but here's a start http://www.cmar.csiro.au/e-print/open/holper_2001b.html
I first startted reading about this in the late seventies in Scientific American and was horrified by the apathy of those who I discussed the topic with.
I don't see how you can decide to be sceptical in the face of the massive evidence that's been dug up on this over the last 35 years.

Even if we are not totally responsible, we are certainly making a major contribution. I see the potential for there to be more benefits in working to solve this issue than just the lives that can be saved. Personally, I'd like to see a world that generates it's power from renewable resources.
And I think it would be nice to see the world unite to solve a major problem.......it might lead to a few less wars.
The issue is not so much whether we're totally responsible, it's dealing with the problem.

Of course not... some of the more fanatic religites will want their god to fix the problem, or may see it as their god's way of ending the world and begin the usual theatrics (they'll be the ones on the street with signs, shouting 'The end is near! Repent! Repent! Jesus is coming anytime now! Repent!' etc...).
Others will join in saying that it's their particular god that's called the concerned residents of earth to take action to protect it, even the ones that think deities are nothing but shenanigans perpetrated by the few to swipe money from the many (Those will be the ones on tv saying 'A mighty move of god is taking place, he's brought together men of different faiths to be used for his glory as we glorify him by working together to fix what evil has done to his glorious creation!).
Again, the religious differences won't be put aside, they'll simply use the opportunity for publicity or take to the streets to convert people when the heat really gets bad. Some will even be stubborn enough to say god doesn't need people of other faiths to fix this, he already has a plan to protect his children.
Yes, I do have a very poor view of the religious faithful's ability to do anything to advance or preserve humanities well being. Their history just doesn't convince me that they actually have human kind's best interests at heart.

I'm more than willing!! But I suspect there are some who *want* the world to end. It saddens me that some people would put our planet, and all life on it, at risk to fulfill a prophesy that may not even be true. Some of the answers here reflect that insanity.
I'd like to "come together" as you put it. But it will not happen until people are face to face with the real dangers of global warming, and without a second coming in sight. Maybe then more people will wake up to reality, for our children's sakes and beyond.

Dear missing link, its not the difference in religion that is causing the problem but human expedience - we always seem to take the short cut. We simply cannot think that way any more - there isn't more where that came from any more, because there is simply far too many of us to wastefully squander the world 's resources at the rate we do. Yet we still push the consumer syndrome as if there is no tomorrow. Suzuki around the mid seventies gave the world around fifty years before it goes into a catastrophic collapse. When the politicians world wide clamour about environmental issues and global warming as they presently do, it seems to me that the canary in the mine is beginning to panic. I seem to hold to the consensus that there is no human solution to reverse the trend in time - the momentum that we have already generated is simply far too great.
Back to square one. Were the Scriptures wrong in predicting the end? I begin to wonder!!!. Even serious environmental scientist judging by their own data come to the same conclusion. Where else have you got to go?
Peace

because of the fact international Warming is a fantasy that may not be able to be substantiated while each and all of the info are regarded at. The Globe has heated and cooled for 1000's of years, (ever hear of the ice age?) did you understand that purely years in the past Greenland has heat sufficient to strengthen plant life that have been considerable sufficient to export or that Antarctica grow to be as quickly as tropical? this is a factor of the cycle of this dazzling planet. human beings or no human beings it is going to heat and funky. situation solved Ha! We did it.

I agree. Even now, I'm not sure how much we can do, but it's worth the effort. If we do nothing, the outcome is certain.
This IS the only planet that will sustain our form of life in this solar system.
There is a belief by many (which is actually supported by quantum physics) that we are all connected. What we do to each other, we do to ourselves.

Yes keep religion aside with some politicians, fundies and popes and decrease the military budget for time being.
And that, is not possible.
Not until people really and "really" feel the heat of that warming in next 100 years, when they know it's going to burn them down when they walk on streets for a minute or two...
That's when they will start acting. I mean that's the level it must reach to be defined as "alarming" according to the religions and Governments.

Global warming and ice ages have been a constant cycle since the planet existed.
You should try using your energy on something that you can do something about. You will die one day, and the planet will cycle just as it always has.
Which one do you think you can actually make a difference in?

I live in a temperate northern area. We get plenty cold here in winter. I am also 2000 miles from the ocean. I am presently using my giant smokestack to burn garbage as fast as I can. Garbage, the NEW alternative fuel.
I personally think that the planet goes through cycles with the sun. Cycles of differing solar radiation. Whether we are warming or not is really something that is beyond our control and subject to powers beyond our control. Things only under the control of God.
