If this is a practical question, Beretta 92, SIG 226, Glock pistols will never let you down for autos. Anything S&W or Ruger is 100% reliable for revolvers.
Off Topic - I love it when women answer these questions. There seems to be a large number of chicks around here that have a good deal of knowledge about guns.

"Best" is a very subjective term. Is it best design? best sales suceess? Best over time? Anyway since you asked, and based on many factors I'd say........
The Colt 1911- long lasting, many produced, war time proven & Anything by Browning is best.
The Browning Hi-Power- The auto pistol made better on the 1911's issues, yet actual design credit goes to Saive. Made The hi cap mag common, war time proven on many sides, locking system coppied by most pistols since.
S&W Military & police or Model 10- This blue steel revolver was the standard police side arm in the US for years saw WW2 service and won many a fight. From its basic form other guns were born and the double action revolver others like colt & ruger tried to beat.
The TC Contender- While not the first to use rifle rounds, It was the gun that really made Handgun hunting what it is today.
#5? The Glock series- This was a hard choice I colud have named a few others instead like the Colt 1873 or The Walther p38, etc. But the Glock unique design & use of polymer changed the gun industry & has replaced the S&W as the default "cop gun."

The best all time handguns in the world? In chronological order:
1. The Colt Patterson percussion revolver; 2. The Colt Army single action revolver; 3. The Colt Python double action revolver; 4. The Browning P-35 Hi Power; 5. The Glock Family of pistols.
In the first three places are the Colts because Colt revolvers pioneered the revolving pistol industry with the percussion revolver, and the single n double action revolvers. Then the P-35 because it was actually John Browning's refinement of the venerable 1911 and it was the first practical, concealable high capacity pistol. Finally the Glock pistols because Gaston Glock has really revolutionized the handgun industry with his high cap, double action, accurate n durable polymer frame pistols.
