Yes, it is quite likely that Jiu Jitsu is way too demanding for your physical condition. I would strongly suggest that you train in Tai Chi Chuan. It is great for increasing your range of motion, stretching, etc.. It is a non-contact form of Martial Art.

Twenty-seven and your injury was four years ago. You have in favor your youth-you are still fairly young and so your metabolism runs a little faster than a forty-five year old. Brazilian ju-jitsu would be a little better than Japanese since there is a little less in the way of throws and the amount of shock and impact that your back takes in Brazilian. You may want to avoid slams, projections and hard throws-especially in the beginning.
See if you can remember any of those back exercises that the PT people gave you and dust them off and start doing them. If you don't have any then find some back exercises on the Internet and start doing them. You may want to try doing a little Yoga or Pilates for a month or two to build up your flexibility and strength in and around that once injured area which will help you not only for taking martial arts but also make you more healthy in general. Next; start looking for a school and instructor that has people in their classes like you or people that have some ailments and physical deficiencies or even some older type students. If he does and he has a good amount of experience in working with such students then it is probably a good class for you to try.
The school you are considering now may be a good fit for you or maybe not. Go and watch several classes and see what is involved and talk to the instructor about your situation. Look to see how much and how physically demanding the class is and on hard on students it is. When students like you come to my studio there is a portion of the registration process that asks for that kind of information as to physical problems. A good instructor will know what areas or techniques you will have problems with, what to take extra time and be extra careful in doing, and what areas and techniques to avoid. They will also make sure that this is carried out in class and workouts. Many times these type of students once they have been working out and getting some good types of exercise can do more in those areas than when they started and their previous injury is not as much of a limitation.
So start now with Yoga, Pilates, and those back exercises, build up your strength and flexibility in and around that injured area and once that has happened then you will be better prepared to start martial arts and it will be less painful and easier to stay with doing.

If you'd have started Jiu Jitsu before your back problems, it may have kept you from developing them... now that they're there, I wouldn't start Jiu Jitsu, but instead something like Tai Chi, which will strengthen your back. If you're still interested in Jiu Jitsu after you strengthen your back, try it then.

how about do some tai chi first, in theory it will help you get a better posture and make your back better from its exercises...then once your strong enough do something more challenging...
remember, Bruce Lee had an injured back, he was bed-ridden for 6 months, they said he couldnt do martial arts again, and guess what, he got even better than he was before!

yes, your worry is true . Jujitsu is quite dangerous to practice . If you still insist on such type, try aikido first .
