I helped a man who was beaten daily to the sound of biblical quotes, when I say beaten, I mean beaten from being a tiny tot. My question is: Will his Dad go to heaven because he was a true fundamentalist and followed the bible to a T, spare the rod etc? His wife (shackle) endured the same. He followed the biblical teachings. Heaven or Hell?

icy cool, are you saying that heaven is full of people who would take an innocent child, and beat and damage him? If I believed heaven existed I'd be praying not to land up there.

My heart and soul goes out to any child /adult who has suffered by the hands of parents/or anyone who has infected their lives/minds by this obsession of which I call a virus that takes the minds of fundamentalists of religion. Do I think they know what they are doing and what effects they have? my answer is YES... they understand fully the hurt they cause to children/people, but do I think they care? NO! Because they can look into the bible which is filled with bigotry and hatred and justify every damn thing they say, whether it destroys those they are supposed to love unconditionally or not. Will they go to heaven or hell? In my mind there isn't either, but if there is an after life, I hope they never rest walking around aimlessly looking for something that never existed.

The heaven issue is a different subject, but I can answer the discipline issue:
Discipline in the Bible is not only referring to physical punishment.
There are many types of discipline as it also means to instruct or inculcate.
Someone who beats another every time a wrongdoing has been committed needs to think closer at what the Bible is really admonishing about training up a child.
Constant beating is wrong.
The Bible answers: "The rod and reproof are what give wisdom; but a boy let on the loose will be causing his mother shame." (Proverbs 29:15)
Some shy away from the word "rod," thinking that it implies some kind of child abuse. But it does not. The Hebrew word for "rod" referred to a staff, such as the one a shepherd used to guide—not assault—his sheep.* So the rod stands for discipline. http://www.watchtower.org/library/g/1997/8/8/article_03.htm
In the Bible, to discipline primarily means to teach. That is why the book of Proverbs says some four times, 'listen to discipline.'
Mildness, self-control, and consideration should govern any discipline given. Thus it is a sign of love. The exercise of parental authority in a loving manner, not harsh brutality, offers the best likelihood of success.

The Catholic analysis: The dad is guilty of a hideous and grave moral offense, which may be a mortal sin (i.e., a ticket to hell) if it was committed with full knowledge and full consent of the will. It'd be hard to argue that anyone could not know that you're not supposed to beat your kid, but I suppose that if the dad was just certifiably crazy then he might not have made a full consent of the will. We can say that the dad definitely placed his soul in jeopardy by committing child abuse, but only God knows how things ultimately ended up with him.
Ugh. Religion shouldn't make us whitewash the fact that this is a disgusting and horrifying crime.

Religion gives you a justification to continue in your delusion.
Just take away the God/holy book bit and you can see far more clearly.
