The recovery rate for alcoholism is something like 5% So I would say there's not a whole lot you can do besides be supportive. I'm iffy on how effective meetings are, some people I know have said that they feel more like drinking after going to one, if your husband feels that way maybe therapy would be a better place. Also changing habits and ending friendships that could compromise his sobriety would be a good idea. Good luck to him.

This is a critical time right now, be supportive and positive. The first step was acknowledging the problem. After that, it is one day at a time. I know many former alcoholics who are living good lives now. He needs to establish new friendships, new hobbies and get to the root of why he WAS drinking.
Negativity will not help anyone.
If you see him really struggling, suggest a referral to a Psychologist or Psychiatrist because he may have underlying issues like, Bipolar, Depression or some other disorder. Medication can make all the difference and help with the treatment program also but only a mental health professional can determine this.
Best wishes to you both.

well, i drink a lot too, i did the program thing, got 7 months clean time, then started smoking weed and drinking beer again, pretty soon i was back into meth. i would reccomend not hanging out with friends that drink, there is a pill you can take, but if you drink on that pill you need to go DIRECTLY to the hospital, i think that drug should be banned. some of us get into situations like a family gathering and just can't help it. one day at a time is right, and relapse is part of healing, long as he's making it to work, and not being abusive to anyone you might want to stop being so namby pamby, or maybe like, have a designated cocktail night, like saturdays. thats what my wife and i do, she gets her desired beverage, and i get mine, and we only buy as much as we plan to drink, that way the grass gets mowed on sunday instead of me watching horror movies and swilling beer all day.

There is a medication that the doctor can give him, but he would have to agree to take it.
