18"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
20Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master.'[b] If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. 21They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me. 22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin. 23He who hates me hates my Father as well. 24If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 25But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: 'They hated me without reason

also; John 17-21 explains why
17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God

Tuberoot.....I have not said 1 word against anyone, and I agree wholeheartly that self righteous people are a stench in the nostrails of God,
I asked "Christans " what they thought a certain scriptutre meant and "you" went into attack mode , seems to me you are the one who is acting self righteous and judging people.
I did not write Gods word or make it have the effect it has on peoples hearts, I'm just along for the ride too!

This is one of my favorite and most encouraging scriptures. God showed this scripture to me when I was younger. I was getting to the point in my life where I was choosing things that followed God, and my friends were not really agreeing with my choices or understanding why I wanted to go in that direction. It reminded me that there are people that will always disagree with what I am doing. There are always going to be people that choose to go their own way and their own path. I am not here to please the world. I am here to follow Christ. My job on this earth is to follow the path that he has called me to lead. I have been picked out of the world to be holy like God is holy. Holy means set apart, and this passage reminds me that being set apart may make some people angry and may even make some of them dislike me. But, someone else's hatred shouldn't discourage me from following God. I should always remember that my savior experienced that hatred as well. He was hated and disliked and beaten. He went throught that. He understands what is means to be hated. I can go to him anytime in prayer, and he is going to understand how I feel because he was there too. He's been there and has been through MUCH worse. This reminds me of that.

Yes, even in being persecuted, Christians are like Jesus. They need to develop a strong, loving bond to help them withstand that hatred. (John 15:12, 13, 17) Why would the world hate Christians? Because, like Jesus, they are “no part of the world.” (John 17:14, 16) They are neutral in military and political matters, and they observe Bible principles, respecting the sanctity of life and keeping to a high moral code. (Acts 15:28, 29; 1 Cor. 6:9-11) Their primary goals are spiritual, not material. They live in the world, but as the apostle Paul wrote, they do not ‘use it to the full.’ (1 Cor. 7:31) True, some have expressed admiration for the high standards of Jehovah’s Witnesses. But Jehovah’s Witnesses do not make compromises to seek admiration or acceptance. As a result, most in the world do not understand them, and many hate them.

The hating world in this case referrers to the persons who reject the guidance and moral principals taught by Jesus. What existed before was vague and it was easy to rationalize behavior that was-according to Jesus-sinful.
"Thou shall not commit adultery" Ex 20:14 became "Whoever looks at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart." Mat 5:28 for example.
If the world is accepting a person's moral conduct then that person is not likely to be adhering to Jesus teaching.
Jesus did not focus all of his attention on the most obvious sins and sinners. His condemnation of religious leaders of that time:To the Pharisees and Sadducee's he said "Oh you hypocrites. You can look at the sky to identify the weather but you cannot determine the sign of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign and so no sign will be given to them except for the sign of the prophet Jonas." Mat 16:3&4. The sign that Jesus refered to-the prophet Jonas-is believed to be that Jonas spent 3 days in the belly of a big fish (some believe a whale) then was spit out on dry land and Jesus had 3 days in the tomb then was reserected.

Does it mean that you have to act like you are perfect and judge others for not being or pretnding to be perfect?
Do people who are not perfect hate God? Or is Jesus the friend of those who know that they aren't perfect and trust Him?
Did the Pharisees think that they were perfect? Yes. So are those who treat others poorly and as if they had the corner on righteousness.
EDIT: You should listen to him.
17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

You need to go a couple verses back in John to get a full picture of why Christians are hated. To verse 14.
A: We are Jesus' friends if we obey him.
B: Jesus has chosen us, we are chosen instruments.
C: Brotherly love is why we are chosen.
