I'm actually curious to see how many people here actually trained in the weapons they listed.

by training i mean SPARRING.

Since you have excluded the firearm (pistol) I would fall to the knife, or jutte for practical purposes (as they can be carried, concealed).

If we were to go on a "throwback" tour, I would prefer a double handed longsword or a spear (as it was a more dangerous weapon but I have not trained in spear).

Saddly enough- a flail is such an oddity that you could probably walk around the streets with it today (in a case) and tell a cop that its an antique wall-peice and get away with it- provided you didn't look like you are about to commit a felony....

The jo, as it is approximately 4 feet long, just like a broom-stick hence it's practicality.
Jojitsu or the using of the staff has been around since before records began, developing from a basic want to defend ourselves. I sure even early man used sticks as weapons.

Jojitsu, though, didn't actually become formalised until around the 16th Century. Before this time martial artist preferred the Bo which was several centimetres longer and would involve different movements. But thanks to Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi, who was an exceptional martial artist, who formed new movements to counteract the sword and bo's weaknesses. After Gonnosuke had proved the worthiness of the Jo it became more widespread and martial artist started taking it serious as a formalised weapon.

And as we know eventually Morihei Ueshiba combined certain Jo movements with his philosophy and created Aiki-Jo.

well seeing how any weapon you should master the movement and not the actual weapon (this is what makes ordinary items such as newspapers, waterbottels, etc. effective) I would say the avg. walking cane. It can be used effectively in fighting like in kali/arnis as well as the advantages of the hooked end. Also its perfectly legal in any state.

My favorite weapon is a 12 gauge shotgun. Makes a big boom and scares the crap out of people.

A weapon is useless (or worse if your opponent takes it from you) unless you know how to use it!

My choice is the walking stick / cane.

It is fast, versatile, misleading (most people never think of a cane as a weapon) and I always have it with me!

Katana and scabbard combo. Bow and arrows for ranged attackes.

But I actually have to learn the bow and arrow first. lol Well, not so much learn as perfect targeting.
