It's not Religion & Spirituality but you didn't specify.
I was reading a book (a political thriller about a plot to overthrow the US government believable enough to be scary) All the action centered around one protagonist who I assumed was the hero of the story. Three quarters of the way through the book, he manages to fight and sneak his way to his office in the pentagon in order to get important papers that would prove his innocence to the government agents that think he's a traitor. His secretary hands him the papers, then pulls out a gun and shoots him right through the eye killing him instantly. His assistant then takes on the lead role and turns out to be the hero of the story. I have to say that took me completely by surprise. There were hints throughout the story but I only saw them in hindsight.

Well, once I thought my husband was incapable of truly romantic gestures. He's the type to buy jewelry and roses, when I'm the type who is happy with hand picked flowers and a note. Anyway, he knew that I wanted a vanity table and we couldn't afford one. So, one day out of the blue, I came home from work and he took all of my makeup and hair stuff and organized it nicely on a little table in front of the closet mirror. He put out candles and made it very pretty. Granted, it was just on the floor in front of my closet, but just the thought and effort he put into it made me realize that there was so much more to him than I ever thought.

I've never expeienced: "after thinking that nothing would ever surprise you again" - sounds like an unpleasant state!

I was quite shocked to see your question. Does that count?
