As a retired teacher, now employed as a substitute teacher in a large metropolitan school district inundated with Hispanic students, many here illegally, who report to me daily that they don't know how to read, write, or speak English so they don't have to do the assignments, I am very disturbed.
President Bush, and many of our legislators, state and Federal, have reported that deporting millions of illegal Hispanics back to Mexico is impractical, and would be violating their "rights". I would like to know why our American government has given any "rights" to illegals, no matter what country they come from. I would like to know why the Federal Government promotes illegals by allowing them to attend our public schools and eat free lunches, providing them with college scholarships to state colleges and universities.
I would like to know why I am subjected to the "music of Mexico", played at ten thousand decibles, by the Hispanics driving through my neighborhood, sitting at a stop light, or just driving down the street.
Most Hispanic students I have encountered in the public school system are obnoxious and disrespectful. They do not like any "Gringo", and they are very quick to accuse anyone who is not of their culture, teacher or student, of being "racist".
Yes, I want to rid America of all illegal Mexicans. I don't care whether they are a mother, father, grandparent, uncle, aunt, brother, sister, etc., etc. Get out of my country. I am a descendant of a recognized Native American Indian tribe, whose ancestors were demoralized and decultarized by the American government; forced to attend "government" schools and punished if they spoke their language or attempted to perform tribal rituals.
Many Native Americans were not even given citizenship until the late 20's or 30's, even though many fought for the Union Army and the Confederate States of America under Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee. Native Americans served during WWI and WWII, but given little respect, as were the blacks who served. Special barracks were "set aside" for the "Indians" and "Negroes". We were not allowed to "socialize" with the "whites".
"Illegals", no matter what their country of origin, have no "right" to be in America, and any President, legislator, or Supreme Court Justice who says they do, is full of *****!

I used to feel sorry for them until I realized that most of them are just working the system the same way many US born citizens do. If the economy in their own country is so bad that they have no choice but to cross the border, why do they keep having more children than they can support? Maybe because the more US born children they have the more public benefits they are eligible for? Or maybe because they know that the government is so stupid that it's unlikely that a mother of 6 US born children will be easily deported.
But ultimately the blame lies mostly on the greedy people who employ illegals. If nobody employed undocumented aliens they would have no reason (or excuse) to come here. I don't buy the story about them doing the jobs nobody else wants do do. The reason why nobody wants to do the jobs Mexicans do is because the salaries are ridiculous. If the employers offered reasonable salaries and unemployed US citizens were required (forced) to either work or starve rather than rely on welfare I'm sure the positions would be filled by legal people. But then again I suppose that the government sees the use of illegal aliens as an alternative to outsourcing to countries like China or India.

What you say is true and the reason I know this is that I work w/Americans that are of hispanic heritage, and in the most part they have no problem with illegals from latin countries but if an illegal come into our hosp that is from some other country, boy does the mouth start moving about how they are illegal. Some how we turn a blind eye to them if they are from south of the border with the thought that they are just trying to make a better life for them self but at who's expenses.Mine the tax payer.I wonder if they would come here if they got nothing from the govt at all?Now for me Im against all illegals and would be against you too if you are illegal or stay here one min past the time you should leave.Just my thoughts

I keep hearing what smart, industrious people the illegals are. So why aren't they fixing their own countries?
The problem with them is that as a society we cannot absorb millions and millions every year, without ruining our own society. See the presentation at NumbersUSA.com
Also, according the a Dept. of Justice (DOJ) report, 23 Americans are killed every day by illegals who are drunk drivers. Of course after they are released on bail, where do you think they go?
Also, there are over 250, 000 illegals here who are child molesters. How do they know? The DOJ tracks the cases.
Then there are the gangs. The California jail population is 20% illegals, which we pay for.
We need and want immigrants. But we should be able to screen out the criminal elements. Build the fence now. Then let all immigrants in to be citizens, only if they swear to become Americans.

I am really worry, and I would like that our government give them more support to stay in México, because we need our farmers (why we have to import fruit and vegetables, while thousand of farmer have no job?!).
The US Companies, which do everything legally, request the farmers which they need direct to our government, but the problem are all the others individuals and enterprises, which offer a job to illegal immigrants to save money...
It is negative for the image our nations, because at least 90% of the US people think all the mexican have the educational level our farmers. The negative attitude against Mexicans, change our positive idea about vacationing in USA.
I think only 2 sectors can change this sad situation: the Mexican government (for sure they won´t do anything, because they prefer to have people in USA sending money...), and the normal US citizen, when they stop offering a job to the illegal immigrants, it will stop.
But, who can change their point of view? The US Gorvernmen? Till now, they are spending the money in seless measures...

Some good points. But like ignat said, I keep hearing this you were immigrants too. well no one in my family ever came here illegally.
And this , they do the jobs that Americans wont do. Really so the light construction jobs and masonry, and truck driving, and landscaping, and drywalling and all that... those are jobs americans wont do?
My friend who manages a company recently had to fire 4 guys who were using fake identities/illegal. They were making 13 dollars an hour. I know plenty of people who would have done the same job.
It needs to be legal or not at all.
I think the guest worker process can be expanded but it has to be well managed.
And the 'anchor baby' law needs to end.

I frequently get into this discussion with my mom, who feels the same way you do. I think what you may want to try and remember is that most people who come here from Mexico really don't want to leave their own country, but they are doing so for economic reasons. If you had a family that was living in poverty, and you knew that you could give them a better life by going across the border and making a better wage, I think you would do that for your family. The mexican government is very corrupt and does not function in the same way as the US. Also, it's important to know that many of the jobs that are being done by mexicans are jobs that Americans wouldn't do. If the mexicans left, who would clean your hotel room when you travel, who would wash your dishes when you go out to eat, and there are many, many other jobs that immigrants from many other countries are doing. If they were sent back, the entire economical system would be affected and many businesses would not be able to function.
I will say though that there has to be some way of controlling the numbers, I don't think our country has the resources to support the number of immigrants coming into our country from around the world.

I think anyone entering this country illegally (Mexican, Canadian, English, etc.) should be put in jail for committing a crime and then deported.
If you want to change what constitutes legal and illegal then by all means do so but if what they are doing is "illegal" they should be punished no differently than anyone who does something illegal.
When you enter any other country illegally they put you in prison.

It doesn't matter what country they come from. Singling out Mexicans only adds fuel to the argument that those against illegal immigration are racists.
I do think that illegal immigration adds some, but takes more from society as a whole.
There is something desperately wrong with a country who pays people to not work then allows people from other countries to come here to work for substandard wages.

I think it's WAY too easy to jump on the 'we were all immigrants once' band wagon when you take 'illegal' out of the equation. My great-grandparent's weren't illegal. They left EVERYTHING behind to come here. They did not send money 'back home'. They bought and worked THEIR land because there were no Walmarts back in the day. Oh, and they did bother to learn English too.
