Turning side kick.IT is quick and usually unexpected.

I have taken more tourneys with side kicks but I think that a kick is only considered best when it serves the purpose for which it was intended.

A front kick thrown at the right time will stop an opponent in his advance.

A back kick will catch a pursuer off guard & end a fight!

A round kick can be thrown with the force of the hips & force the opponent off balance.

A side kick is delivered with enough force to dislodge the staunchest opponent from a set stance.

An axe kick is a sure fire fight ender!

To each his own. If it end the battle in your favor, all the better!

I have experience with a wide variety of martial arts, but at heart I am a grappler. I started with Judo and American Wrestling.

That being said the front heel kick would be most common for my style. This is just a front kick using the heel for contact. The primary goal is to create distance and the focus would be the solar plexus but never higher unless used as a distraction for a take-down or clinch.

A lead leg side kick. For side kicks you use larger muscle groups, the hip, lower back and upper leg and since its a pushing action it is very easy to use and generate power with while doing slide action. Its also very effective in the street at the knee or ankle or can be executed higher to the abdominal and stomach or rib area. Because it is a straight line attack it also gets there faster than a roundhouse and defenders can not step around it or slide in on it very easily like a round house kick. Your toes are also relatively protected since you are using either the heel or blade of the foot and using the lead leg gives your opponents less time to react to it. With some other kicks the type of shoe you have on at the time also limits your ability to flex your ankle and toes correctly which is less of a problem with a side kick. If you have a good one you can even use it like a jab the only difference being that it comes with much more power and to some targets which are to low for your opponent to block.

I agree with Moon Dragon's logic on it.

I have kicks that I like, but I don't think there really is a best kick.
One of my favorite basic kicks is a back leg roundhouse kick. Just with the turning and stretching of the hips, it's a great snap/swing/whip. It's not the best for a centerline style strike, but a roundhouse to the cranium isn't pretty.

none is best all the time. Each kick has certain situations in which it is the better kick, but none of them are ever the best kick.

There is no 'best'.

The effectiveness of the strike is dependent upon your skills and abilities, as well as the immediate situation. A regular front kick wont be effective if you suck at them or if your opponent is ready for one, or if you're doing it from a position ill-suited for them. The same would go for any type of attack.

Depends on the situation. Nothing is ever cut and dried when fighting.

Myself, when I spar, I tend to like to keep them at foot range, so I use front snap kicks to their hips to keep them back or off balance.

A pivot sidekick has worked well for me in the past. It looks exactly like a roundhouse, but instead of coming from the side, it comes straight in like a normal sidekick.

But in a street fight, I would have to theorize that a roundhouse to the knee or any kick to the knee would be the best bet. I say theorize because i've had the good fortune to never have been in a street fight.

In my own experience I say that its either the cross leg side kick (Bruce Lee's favourite kick) or the 360 Back Thrust kick. In fight science the 360 Back Thrust kick kicked by the Taekwondo exponent was noted as the strongest but if the karate guy added a little force in his kick by using the lifting momentum during the cross leg process and pressed his body weight forward, he probably would have kicked harder. Both r abt da same but da cross leg side kick is easier to kick although I prefer using back kick partly bcoz its faster.

in a real fight i dont think you should ever kick your opponent above the lower thigh. Doing so only leaves you open to an experienced fighter. For all you TKD guys out there, it sure is pretty and in a kickboxing match it works well. However, when u r in a bar or alley and try that on me your gonna get yourself handled real quick. I actually think a muay thai knee is the best use of the lower body in real combat, and it was measured as the most forceful blow of any martial arts.

Overall my fav. kick is a low line kick to the knee. I do not suggest kicking any higher than the waist at anytime and rarely above the knee. This is just me and I train for real life not tournaments or points. Kicking is dangerous in real life and not recom.

The reverse side kick is my favourite because the prep and execution looks exactly like a front kick however most front kick defences don't work against it, also done low it is perfect for applying a knee stomp.
