Gennaio is Italian and it means January, the first month of the year.
The name takes origin from the Latin "Janus" ('Giano' in Italian and 'Janus' in English). Literally it means "month of Janus"

it january in italian.
as someone else already said, it's from the roman god gianus or ianus, that had two heads: one was facing the "old year", i.e. the one that was finishing and the other head was facing the new year coming up. so it's the month between the two years!
ianus was also the god of the door and the house (really important in latin culture) because of his double head that faced both inside and outside.
