Definately the Shetland Sheepdog, because it has a delightful temperament. Gentle, sensitive, loyal and dainty. Very lively, intelligent and trainable. It is one to the smartest breeds, very willing to please and obey. These dogs are so smart that many fanciers consider them to have almost human intelligence. And most of all- very very cute!!!!!

My favorite breed of all is the Irish Wolfhound.. unfortunately it is one with health issues I can't afford right now.. (hence why I don't have one yet) Why?.. They are loyal, they are big teddy bear dogs when not trained to hunt, they are a large breed that is suitable in a smaller home (with a large yard).. I don't know.. I have loved them since I was a kid.. I've known quite a few over the years, and will one day have my own.. I think it's more of a low key personality.. to me it is the ideal match.. (when I have the money for vet bills..I will find one through rescue.. having such a fast growth rate they tend to have bone problems or suffer from things like bloat)

All depends on what purpose you have for the dog. I like the purple healers better for the cattle dogs. Golden Retrievers for a family dog. But out of all of my experiences with a good all round family/cattle dog. It would have to be the basset hound.
Now for the protection dogs. i would have to say a Shepard/lab mix.
A lap dog would have to be a peek a poo.
And a good hunting dog would have to be the German short hair.
I have had experience with all these dogs. And of course many more through out the years. and as of today these are the ones i like the best. But you know that in years to come, I'll experience many different dogs, and my likes could change.

Best breed depends on you and your lifestyle. And where you live.
There are way to many dogs who have been dumped into shelters that need some forever homes. There is nothing wrong with mixed breeds. They love as well as full breed dogs/
I happen to have a Shetland Sheepdog so I am partial to that breed right now.
They are very loyal, protective of our surroundings and myself.
Yet gentle with kids..
The only drawback is you have to deal with barking. They are defenitly barkers.
I trust my Sheltie to be around kids and to even let the kids as young as 2 years old to take for a walk, with me right there of course. That is how gentle he is with kids.

But the best breed is the one that you fall in love with., mixed or other.
Good luck

American Bulldog for me but you will have different needs that you would like your dog to fulfill. Spend some time at a local shelter and get to know the many breeds and how comfortable you are around them, you may just fall in love with an unknown mutt but that "mutt" will provide more love and companionship than you ever thought possible.

It all depends on your life style, the amount of time you have to spend with them and what you want to do with them. Some dogs are ok in town other belong on the farm or ranch. Need a lot more info to make a good answer to this. For my wife and I border collies ans Australian Shepherds are the best. We live on a ranch and they help with the work and are about the smartest animals.

Loves to run with the water hose and gets us ALL wet. She also has the biggest grin you'll ever see on a dog.

i don't think there is a "best" dog breed. Everyone has a breed that suits them. I personally like Dobermans because they're very intelligent, loyal, loving, and mine's my big lap dog haha

Mutts - they're so healthy & cute. They don't have as many genetic pre-dispositions for health problems. As for a certain breeds:
Australian Cattle Dog --- if you have land, smart & need consistent "work" to do
Golden Retriever --- good with family, sweet & sporty
Papillon --- small dog happy in an apt. or on land
