Hello, I am a high school student in need of any Vietnam veteran. I am writing a paper that requires me to ask veterans a couple of questions.
do u think the vietnam war was justifed?
what do u think about the vietnam war now?
Your opinion on communism?
If you were president instead of johnson, what would you have done?
Any help would be appreciated, if you dont feel like posting up these answers publicly please email me. Thank you very much

I am required to interview vietnam veterans, so i cannot go out and make up answers to these questions, seeing that I WAS NOT ALIVE DURING THE VIETNAM WAR. To all those that called me lazy, why don't you think about it because I am a high school student, it is the end of the year and I have 6 finals to study for, I don't drive and can't find a place where vietnam veterans are at. Think before "answering" my question. I prefer answers, not idiotic comments about me being lazy. I fully respect vietnam veterans and I am in no way disrespecting them by asking these questions. So I suggest you shutup and don't speak if you have nothing nice to say.

I'm a Vietnam Vet, I'll answer your questions from a veterans perspective:
Was the war justified?
It was a political decision that the veterans had no input. No one hates war more than a veteran.
What do I think about the war?
It is a shame that all those good men and women died. It is a shame that our politicians send soldiers into battle and then abandon them. Kissinger knew he was leaving Prisoners of War (POWs) behind, still he did it, I will never forgive him or Jane Fonda.
Communism?
If you have no ambition, want to be told what to do, where to go, where to live, how many children you can sire, and don't dare to say anything bad about the leadership, then you may like Communism, I prefer freedom.
If I had been President, I would not have committed our soldiers to a war and then not support their efforts. I would have bombed Hanoi every hour on the hours until they returned all our POWs. I would have revoked Jane Fonda's passport and jailed her for treason in a time of war.
A soldier goes where he/she is ordered to go. Does the best they can with honor and dignity.
I hope this answers your questions from a Vietnam Veteran.

I don't have a good answer for you, but when I had to do this very same thing for Sociology class when I was in school, I wrote letters to two of my uncles who had served during the Viet Nam war, and interviewed a teacher at my school who was also there. Funny enough, all three were Marines. I got answers from one uncle and the teacher was very informative. If you are unable to branch outside of your home because you do not drive, these are options that may be available to you.
I apologize for those who believe you to be lazy for being caused to interview people who would probably rather not remember this time in their lives. It really was not pleasant. I was a small child during this war, and I remember my uncles coming back very much different than what they were when they had gone to war.
Good luck with your paper, and I hope you can find my advice helpful.

Was it Justified?
We went to the assistance of a Government we were allied to. So it was justified. We did not set up the South Vietnamese Government, like Iraq.
What do I think of it now?
On it's worst day the situation in Vietnam was better than what we have in Iraq today. You could put on civvies and take a bus to the airport in Saigon, sure not so in Bagdad.
What do I think of Communism?
All power is vested in the Government, not good.
What would I have done?
Not sent draftees to vietnam unless they volunteered.
Only the Airborne, and Marines and other volunteer units.

I agree with the first guy. I'd go to a veteran's home and meet these guys and then ask your questions. I have no idea how they did what they did when their own country hated em. We have haters today but the military supporters outweigh them by far. I'm just glad most of us support the troops and learned from that mistake.

Right On!!! I have so much respect for these veterans and can't believe how disrespected they were. Sometimes I feel like thats how this Iraq war might end up just not to the same extent.

I'm not a vietnam vet but i'll tell you that these guys deserve the utmost respect. They did their jobs in a crappy country and basically had no support back in those times. God bless each and every one of them.

Most people who fight in a war don't like to talk about it. I would follow the advise of the first answerer. It may seem like a dumb thing to do, but our national heritage is rotting away in VA hellholes. All you have to do is go talk to them. If you don't, then who will?

You could also go to the local VFW and American Legion and tell them what your project is and ask if anyone would agree to be interviewed.
