General surgery, despite the term general in its name, is a surgical specialty doing the surgical treatment of abdominal organs, like the intestines including esophagus, stomach, colon, liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland (depending on the availability of head and neck surgery specialists) and hernias.Few countries added the breast care including the surgical treatment of breast cancer as the responsibility of the general surgeons as well.
