Yes but they are not Department of defense. They are Dept of homeland security. Another major difference is that CG can enforce US law. Other branches are prohibited by law from enforcing US Law. Example 1:This is one of the reasons we can't blanket our boarders with troops. Example 2: US Navy must carry a CG detatchement on ships assigned drug intridiction duty and other maritime intridiction where US law might be violated.

The Coast Guard used to be part of the Department of the Treasury and then they were transferred to Homeland Security. In a time of war the Coast Guard is transferred to the Department of Defense under the Navy of course. Under presidential orders units can be put under military orders such as is happening in the Persian Gulf today. Why the Coast Guard? The Navy is not trained for interdiction or law enforcement. We were trained to blow things up not read them their rights.

Yes, but they fall under the Department of Homeland Security and not the Department of Defense. They still fall under military law. They are not in the Department of Defense because of the Posse Comitatus Act , they have to enforce law upon US, non military citizenry, the US military under the DoD is prohibited by the constitution from doing this.

technically, it is part of the Department of Homeland Security, and not the Department of Defense.

But in reality, they do much the same as the other military Branches, just on a more localized level.. allthough they do have cutters in the Gulf and have had casualties there.

Yes, the Coast Guard is awesome. If you watched any of the Hurricane flood rescues, you would be impressed. I hope you're the kind of person they need. Few people can do the job they do. Good Luck to you

The Coast shield has replaced to the dept of fatherland protection, no longer the dep. of Transportation. That reported, you are able to no longer place Coast shield preparation next to Marine preparation and say they are "comfortable" basically because of the fact actual wellness standards are decrease. this is comparing apples and oranges. Coast shield workers flow out interior the worst climatic circumstances to locate and rescue human beings in dazzling threat or misery. they seem to be a significant element interior the prevention of serious drug shipments and unlawful immigration to our united states of america. everyone who considers the coast shield comfortable has their head up their *#&.

Yes they are although most people think they are not. Check out the role they played during Vietnam and the war today. They do not get alot of recognition for this.
