I always thought sterling silver wasn't as strong, and would tarnish unlike other types of "silver" jewelry, like platinum, or white gold. Would it be a better bet to go w/ one of those rather than sterling silver? Would it be worth the cost of platinum in the end?

I like platinum and sterling silver but my silver ring did tarnish when I wore it daily (not married just another ring). If you don't have a preference I'd go with white gold if you prefer the look of silver.

I can't tell you about rings... however, I wear a sterling silver necklace that my now-fiance gave to me on June 29, 2007. I would say that I've work it 75% of the days since, I shower in it, sometimes sleep in it, and overall it receives a similar type of wear that a wedding ring might. It has help up alright, isn't tarnished or anything, but it has bent in one place over time. It has also developed some surface scratches that won't polish out. I would say go for it if you want to. It's been done, that's for sure. Not to mention, tarnish is SIMPLE to polish out at home if you just take the time, so if you changed your mind about that it wouldn't be a problem. What I will say though is not to get one silver and one gold, as the gold will wear down the silver. I also have heard that the inside of a silver ring will grow flat overtime from wear, but ultimately does that matter? It wouldn't to me. Do whatever YOU want to do. If you think it's a good idea, go for it. Also, I think that fingerprint wedding band idea is AMAZING.

My wedding band is sterling silver, 14 years ago it cost $9. I picked it out myself much to my husband's displeasure. He didn't think it cost enough. As long as you wear the ring everyday it won't tarnish at all. Heck, I don't wear mine constantly and it doesn't tarnish. Also, who washes their hands with their rings on? Take the ring off put it in your pocket and put it back on after you're done. That way you can avoid the sores under the ring.

Click on the link below my ring is in catalong 5, ring R7.

I will say this, if you are having any stones set in the ring I would get a harder metal, like platinum. My engagement ring is also sterling silver and I had the prongs replaced with platinum because the silver moved, which is a good way to lose the stone.

I have a sterling silver ring that I absolutely love, it is not my wedding band, but I do wear it quite frequently. It needs to be polished quite often as it does tarnish, so if you like the look of silver, I'd go with the white gold. Like others have said, platinum is really expensive and white gold is just as nice. Someone also mentioned titanium. My husband got a titanium wedding band when we got married. It was relatively inexpensive, and it is very durable. However, if you work with you hands a lot, most jewelers do not recommend them because the metal is so hard, special equipment needs to be used to cut the band...if you injure your hand and the band needs to be cut, you may lose your finger before the tools to cut the ring can be located! This is just a warning we received before my husband purchased the ring. Good Luck and Congrats!

If the silver ring has 925 on the inside then it is a pretty good ring that won't tarnish . Most rings are silver dipped in gold. You will however have to maintain the ring like any other piece of jewelry, if you like the look of silver then just go with white gold, I love it. I think platinum is nice but is not worth all the buzz that it is getting. The ring in short is not the issue , it is the feelings for one another that seals the deal.I would marry my beau with a rubber band, but hey that's just me.Good luck!!!

Sterling won't stand the test of time. It is a soft metal and easy to bend. Trust me - I wear mostly sterling and I have had to replace rings b/c they were bent so badly when someone stepped on my hand! White gold is stronger, but it is still soft. Also, you will have to have it replated every1-2 years depending on how often you wash your hands while wearing the ring and how active you are with it on. Platinum is a natural white metal that is very strong and will not waste away over time. Another option is palladium. It is in the same family as platinum, naturally white, but not as expensive.

Read up on all of them, but you would have a hard time finding a wedding ring in sterling. Congrats on the engagement and good luck in your decision making!

I would go with white gold. I'm not sure if sterling tarnishes but I think it does. I asked a jeweler if platinum is worth it over white gold (because the "white" on white gold rubs off over a long time) She told me that you can get it refinished. I believe it is plated with Rhodium. There is also titanium to consider though which is relatively inexpensive.

Silver does tarnish so you'd have to polish/clean it. I have a white gold ring and I love it. It's all a matter of personal taste. I wouldn't do platinum unless I could afford it, white gold gives you the same look for a lower price. My vote is for white gold, less upkeep. Good luck.

Silver isn't strong enough to handle not only the daily wear and tear, but years of daily use. You would be better off going with at least white gold, if not platinum, in the long run.

sterling silver is fine, platinum is good, as is titanium, i've been reading a bit about the latest thing in wedding rings, a metal that does not tarnish, or loose its shine, or scratch or dent, but i think when you know what it is it may put a lot of people off so i'm including a link, see and read for yourself, everythings worth investigating for such an important piece
