Getting through life there are really only two options available. We can go with the mainstream of life making everything go reasonably smoothly or we can struggle against the current and get nowhere.
Personally I like to go with the mainstream, it's a lot easier. I usually ask - "what are the rules?" Once I find the answer to that question, the second question is "what do I have to do specifically, to succeed?" Often I don't like the answer to either question but hey, if I'm going to succeed there's no value to fighting the system. That gets you nowhere.
So, if I had a boss like you describe, the rules are simple enough, he needs his ego stroked, when you have a better idea you need to help him see it and make sure it's his idea and stroke him some more for his outstanding insight, when he seems to have a bit of stress, help him out by taking on some of the work.
That said, you can moralize now and say there's no way. And I'd agree with you too except that those are the rules if you want to succeed in that environment. So under the circumstances, I won't judge the rules, I'd simply carry them out. There are benefits.
If you stroke him well you'll become the favourite so you'll be first in line for promotions and interesting work. If he gets good ideas from you that become his ideas, you can count on it that he's going to be very nice to you to get more ideas later that will help his career. And if you volunteer to do some of his work you'll gain the management experience you need to find a job like his somewhere else or just maybe you might even replace him when he gets fired.

Go to a drug store and get a large bottle of mouthwash. If he has a big ego, stroking it is sometimes the only thing that works.
