Okay so I found out on Tuesday that I have mono. I started feeling the symptoms about 10 days ago, and now I'm out of the "sick" part, like my throat doesn't hurt anymore or anything. But obviously I'm still really tired and weak and everything. Well, I'm going to have to have surgery soon on my gallbladder. But since I have mono, does that mean I'm going to have to wait until I'm completely over it to have the surgery? And if so, how long would that be?

I know I need to talk with my surgeon, I have an appointment with him on Tuesday, but I'm just an impatient person and wasn't sure if anyone on here knew better than me..

Not a stupid question at all. The recovery time for mono is generally about 6 weeks. I had mono many years ago and I recall that the biggest concern with it is the enlarged speen and the risk of the spleen rupturing. These days the doctors will generally postpone surgery for even a cold, so I suspect they would postpone it for safety's sake. I am a nurse and I am working with a nurse that used to be a surgical nurse for several years. I asked her also and her feeling was they would postpone the surgery. The bottom line is, it's up to your doctor. In fact, I think if it were me, I would be reluctant to have the surgery done until I know I am healthy! No reason to take a chance with your health if it is not an emergency. Whatever happens, good luck and I hope it goes well for you.

I think that would be up to your doctor to decide. However, make sure he or she knows about your mono. From what I recall about it, it usually takes quite a while to get over the residual effects, such as the fatigue and weakness you describe. Surgeons generally hesitate to perform operations if a patient is in the recovery stage of an illness, unless it is an emergency.

Talk to your surgeon and physician. It depends on situation, but your spleen can enlarge when you have mono. For that reason, they recommend you don't do any contact exercise while you have mono so it might be dicey having an operation if your spleen is enlarged (ruptures pretty easily when enlarged). I'd say it depends on how vital the operation on your gallbladder is and how long it can wait.

As I said, I'd run it past both the surgeon and physician and maybe even have them talk.

probably so because when you have surgery the pain medicine that they give you will have you so relaxed that they have to put a tube into your throat to make you still breathe and if you have some type of sickness in the throat that might cause a problem go to the doctor as soon as possible to fix this problem
