when you eat small meals every 2-3 hours your body gets enough calories when it needs them and doesnt have any extra left to store in fat reserves. its not even that hard - e.g. if you have to consume 1600cal/day to lose weight then its 6 meals of 267cal.
if you eat only 3 times a day then thats 533cal/meal to lose fat and its not gona work because body doesnt need that many colories/energy at once and will store extra in fat reserves.
if you eat less than your body needs to lose fat - lets say you would eat just those 267cal/meal and have 3 meals - you would only lose water weight and muscle not fat and would slow down metabolism and then gain back more than lost.

Well, I'm no nutritionist, but I've been kinda starving myself in the past 2 months or so, and I've actually lost 23 lbs. By starving myself I mean eating 2 meals (VERY small meals) a day, and eat them 5-7 hours apart. This may not be healthy but if you're desperate to lose weight then that's how you do it.

PS: During that time I was working out 1.5 hrs a day at the gym. But while working out you might wanna take an apple or a banana with you because if you starve yourself while working out you might pass out.

It doesn't, really.. it just keeps your metabolism active.

If you have three bulky high-calorie meals a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner) your body will have some time where the metabolism slows down, and digestion stops because you aren't keeping it "awake" so to speak, with food.

To keep your metabolism "awake" you should eat about 5-6 small (low calorie) meals a day, even if it just is a couple sticks of celery or baby carrots.

The more active your metabolism is, the more calories you burn.

:D~ Well... If eating less slows down your metabolism (It thinks you need to save energy by slowing itself down) And if eating alot will make it faster. It expects to have energy all the time because of the small portions and if you had big less portions a day, then it will slow down.
SO thinkg of More = Faster metabolism
Less= Slower Metabolism
About how it feeds muscle, the protein in the food you eat I think goes to your muscles. If you have a fast metabolism it basically gets rid of all the fatty thingies.
