Good question Sara. In fact, this is one of the things that started me questioning Christianity. There are so many different "versions" of Christianity, all of which say that their way is the only way to salvation. One day as I was saying the Nicene creed in church in unison with the rest of the congregation, I stopped in mid sentence and thought. I realized that the words I was saying and had been saying for many years, were not words that I actually believed.
*****
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, light from light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father [and the Son],
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

I don't believe that there is only one way, one church, (Christian church) that will allow a person to be close to "God". I question the existence of heaven and hell. I believe that people should have the right to believe what ever helps them live their lives to the fullest, but for me, I found that Christianity created so many questions that could not be answered. I am a person who believes in faith. I don't have to have things spelled out for me, I don't have to see to believe - however there are some things that just don't make sense to me regarding Christianity. I believe in a higher being - "God" - and I believe that God is love. Other than that, I'm still not sure what I believe. At first that bothered me. But now it doesn't. I'm OK being in a questionable state.

So, to answer your question now that you have my background, there are many different versions of Christianity and if they are claiming to be Christian, they are praying to a God who is the father with a son manifestation named Jesus (you can translate God and Jesus into the proper terms for each Christian sect). Is the Lutheran God the same as the Mormon God? There are differences in some of the "Gods" that different Christian sects pray to. I think if you delve into a study you would find that the answer is "kinda/sorta but not really". There is an interesting comparison in Wikipedia that I will try to find and post under sources. I think it was comparing Christianity and Mormonism. I have some on line friends that are Mormons and I remember looking it up.

Thanks for posting a question that made me think.

I want a link to the site that says there are >30000 denomination in Christianity. There is a number of them but that ain't it.

And the differences aren't as many as some would have you believe.

Note to Run James Run: the wiki link is impressive but what you have to remember is that a church does not a denomination make. The image at the top of that article provides a view of the major branches of Christianity. All the Churches listed below that fall into one of those categories.

In most cases yes.
It depends if you count Mormonism or the countless others as part of Christianity.
If a sect does not believe Jesus is the son of God, then that sect is a cult.
So, to sum up, most pray to, Jesus the son of God, while others use his title as a false pretense.
God Bless

there are many denominations claiming to be christians. but i don't understand how it can be so hard to understand that there is one Christ, one God. how can there be sooo many ways to get to heaven? the bible says there is one lord, one faith, and one baptism...most people don't know the definition of ONE. if people looked at the bible and understood and accepted what was written, even the parts they don't like, there would not be more than one Christian religion. the word denomination means a part of the whole. so, various denominational religions are telling part of the gospel of Christ, leaving out what is not popular and would cause them to lose membership. not encouraging their members to read and study the Word for themselves to get a full understanding of what God would have you to do. i am not a part of the whole. i have and continue to receive the fullness of the gospel. soooo, in other words, not, they are not all praying to the same God. my criteria to get to heaven can not be different than yours.

Yes all Christians worship the same God. The different denominations simply reflect different styles of worship. In Romans 14 Paul states that all styles of worship are pleasing to God so long as we are worshiping in his name. There is no "true" church. You join the church that helps you to feel closest to God.

I think we all pray to the same God... we just call him different names.... really if we pray to THE GOD.. and there really is only one.. does it matter if what we believe is right or wrong? Does it matter if we call him Jehovah or something else? if there is only one God, then we are all praying to him, whether what we beleive about him is correct or not

When you get Saved, your spirit is Recreated and you become a Child of GOD (Christian to you).

Everybody who has been Born-Again (spiritman Recreated) is in the Family of GOD (SPIRITUAL REALM).

Children of GOD who are SEPERATED by RELIGION do so in the MENTAL REALM.

satan divides us with doctrines and when we fight over those doctrines it is called the "Winds of Doctrines" cause it blows us (Children of GOD) apart.
Hope this helps.!
