If so where can I find the technical specs on ones that are a commercial success and the functions that they are capable of?

There are several household robot categories: vacuum cleaners, pool cleaners and (in my opinion the most successful) robo-mowers.

I like the latter the most because the robotic mowers can truly replace humans mowing the lawn and they need minimal human intervention (mostly setup and replacing used parts).

I think devices like roomba are overrated, because they do not replace a human being – one has to constantly clean it, move it, move the furniture etc..

I believe a successful robot from the future should work without a human help and should fix itself and solve its own problems.

there have been some pool cleaners . I robot has one, and you can google 'dolphin pool cleaner' and 'aquabot'. also a lawn mower but i forget the name.
there have been some 'robot' litter box cleaners and pet feeders/ waterers. but nothing exceptional

The lawn mower is the Robomower. But, to answer your question Honda is testing it's man like robot for aiding disabled people. To my knowledge no one has one out yet.

I've seen a couple of 'automated vacuum cleaners' advertised. I suppose that they'd qualify (just barely ☺) as 'robots. But that's about it.
