This seems strange to me. I thought the bible teaches there is only one god. If what they say is true, then Satan and god are one and the same, or they are polytheists.

I heard a Jehova's witness tell my mother this about ten years ago.

I may have written that in a confusing way. I meant that a Jehova's witness told my mother that Satan is a god.

The rest of the question is my thoughts I've had about the matter since then.

It would seem that true Christians (such as Jehovah's Witnesses) would easily recognize that Satan is the one who blinds the minds of unbelievers.

From multiple translations, please consider 2 Corinthians 4:4...
NASB: the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel
GWT: The god of this world has blinded the minds of those who don't believe. As a result, they don't see the light of the Good News
KJV: the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
ASV: the god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn upon them
BBE: the god of this world has made blind the minds of those who have not faith, so that the light of the good news of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, might not be shining on them.
DBY: the god of this world has blinded the thoughts of the unbelieving, so that the radiancy of the glad tidings of the glory of the Christ, who is the image of God, should not shine forth for them.
WEY: the god of this present age has blinded their unbelieving minds so as to shut out the sunshine of the Good News
WBS: the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them who believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine to them.
WEB: the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the Good News of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn on them.
YLT: the god of this age did blind the minds of the unbelieving, that there doth not shine forth to them the enlightening of the good news

The bible says there are MANY Gods but it is ONLY Jehovah you shall worship.

Exd 34:14 for thou shalt worship no other god: for Jehovah, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

1Cr 8:5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth; as there are gods many, and lords many;

Satan is the ruler of the system of things on Earth.

2 Corinthians 4:4 - "Satan, the god of this evil world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe"

John 12:31 - "The time of judgment for the world has come, when the prince of this world will be cast out."
Footnote: The prince of this world is a name for Satan.

Matt 4:8,9 - Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

god with a lower-case g can mean spirit in general, or even an idol...like saying money is a god.

God with a capitol G means a superlative, like your own name. So saying that Satan is a god is not entirely untrue...saying that Satan is God IS untrue. They wouldn't say the latter.

The Bible even says that Satan is "the god of this system of things".

JW's believe what the Bible says, nothing more nothing less.

MAN, they better not have, ever.

They may not have been a Witness or maybe making it out to be one to give them a bad name.

Anyone that knows a Witness knows that they would never say anything to bring reproch to Jehovah God.

If anyone ever hears of such a thing by all means, call the local Kingdom Hall and report it. Action will be taken if the person is a Witness.

there is only One Creator and that is Yahweh(God). Satan is a created being, therefore he is not a god.

One of the reason's satan fell from Heaven is because he wants mankind to worship him and the angels. Jesus told Satan in the wilderness that God is God and you must worship God only. It needs to be the creation worshipping the Creator, not the creation worshipping the creation and in the Bible it says creature, meaning ourselves and satan.

I was reading something awhile back about when satan tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden. I found this to be quite interesting, but thru the serpent satan told Eve that she will become like "one of them" knowing good and evil. (Satan wasn't saying to Eve that she will become God, but she will become LIKE a god knowing good and evil.) That mean evil existed before the Garden of Eden and that mankind had no knowledge of evil whatsoever. Satan planted that curiousity of evil in Eve's mind which caused her to sin. . satan wants people to think that they can become their own gods, which people can, but that is going against the first commandment!

God and Satan are two different, they are not one together

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.

The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of Gods plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.

Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.

Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.

Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It’s meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

Here is an article right from one of the magazines distributed by Jehovah's Witnesses.

I think it should answer your question.

Title: Who Really Rules the World?

I really hope you take the time to read through it, and I'm sure you will get your question answered.

I do believe in your overhearing the conversation you missed important points. The most important one being what the Bible itself says at 2Corinthians 4:3-4. This is most likely the scripture that was under discussion. Read it and see what you think.
