to most it really doesn't matter. I did not realize I said sweety or hon or dear things like that and then a coworker was like if you call me hon again I am going to scream....well needless to say I then started noticing and I actually stopped but I still say it when I am just talking to people and some notice and flinch others just ignore it and then there are some like us that just use words like this to speak to others. I would say it but if you are doing it to pay her a compliment than maybe just say the compliment

when I was a cashier at a grocery store when I was younger it always creeped me out and I'd turn around and tell all of the other cashiers how creepy the guys were who said it. I realize it wasn't very mature, but still. I really suggest not doing it unless you know the girl. You never know how she'll react and you don't want the whole business thinking you're a perv. and trust, me, they will.

Well, Hun, if you are old and the cashier is young, then no...but if you are only 15 years or so older than the cashier, then absolutely...she will be most uncomfortable.
editd: I am truly dyslexic and I said this in reverse. If you are old then no it won't be offensive, but if you are anywhere near her age it will be offensive.
sorry about that and glad I reread it. I am so embarressed.

Unless you have a southern accent, the word "hon" should not come out of your mouth when speaking to strangers.

I wouldn't. I hated when anyone called me that when I was cashiering. If you see her frequently or had a nice conversation as she rang you up, maybe then. But otherwise it's kind of creepy.

It depends. If she is considerabley younger than you then do not say it. If they are friendly and talk to you then it is ok. If they dan't talk to you at all and are cold you still need to thank them. If you say it in the wrong tone they could take it as sexual harrassment though.

When I was a waitress I absolutely hated this coming from men, but it did not bother me as much coming from old people. Its all in the context I suppose, but it is probably best to stay away from calling any stranger this.

That can be misconstrued as sexual harassment.
