Safety is very important to me. My wife is pregnant and I need to feel she's safe and could walk alone at 10 at night...

I recommend Hoboken - a quick and easy ride into the city, very safe and it's a nice community in itself w/ lots of restaurants, bars, parks, etc.

Really, any of the communities right along the Hudson on the Jersey side are very nice though - Weehawken, Port Imperial, Edgewater and all beautiful towns.

I'm not sure what your budget is. There are some nice areas of Brooklyn. Boerum Hills for example. I've seen nice real estate along Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, as well (waterside).. but they will be pricey. Look into places on Long Island (Nassau County), Westchester County and CT. There are many great school districts to choose from. For commute times by train, check out Metro-North and LIRR websites. Driving is crazy in the morning, so I don't recommend driving unless you like burning time. Good luck with your choice and congrats on the upcoming baby.

Jersey from the Port Authroity Bus Terminal.
Buses over to Wheehawken. Less than 20 minutes.
Or to Bergen or Passaic County 40-50 minutes.

I am in the same boat. I live by Madison Sq Park and work by the TKTS booth. Can't beat the commute on the R/W in the morning. Less than 12 minutes door to door.

Hoboken, NJ is right across the river: you can go by bus, ferry or PATH subway (which reaches 33rd St; nine short blocks south of Times Square).
