Gimp has a lot of capabilities similar to Adobe Photoshop. Personally, I use Photoshop for my professional work, but I have played with the Gimp software and feel that I could do almost anything with it that I do with Photoshop.

The big benefit of course is that it is open-source software and free.

You can also download a free trial of Adobe Photoshop. It does have a steep learning curve, but there are great tutorials on the web to help get you started. Of course however, Photoshop is not free. It will run you anywhere from $300 to $400 if you buy.

If you are a student, you can get the creative suite which includes Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and other stuff for around $400.

If you are needing a free program at the moment, Gimp is a great choice.

Google Picasso is a GREAT free program that allows you to do a lot with your photos. I highly recommend that as well.

I have paint shop pro but have also heard Gimp is good. There are also quite a few tutorials out there for it. I would try it first and see how you like it.

Gimp is said to be the best of the free stuff.
You can download a free 10-day trial of Corel Painter X. I own Corel Painter IX, and that is the quote-unquote "bomb".
