I would say to get down on the floors and child proof EVERYTHING. It is amazing how quickly they get around. Having a five year old you can tell them to stop whatever they are in to. But not with a 15 month old! Hope all goes well. What a great aunt this little girl has!!!!!!!

She's 15 months so you are getting a toddler. You will need to baby-proof the house (don't forget your son's toys, a lot of them will be too small. Help him get some safe tupperware things to put them in in his room). You need outlet covers, 2-3 gates (a hard-installed one at the top of any stairs), a fridge lock and toilet locks are pretty nice, although you should be able to just shut the bathroom door for now. You will need a nice big diaper bag. You will need a crib, nightlight, blankets, sheets, and some stuffed toys. Clothes obviously (and socks and shoes), sunscreen, sun hats, Tylenol and Motrin to keep on hand. Diapers, wipes, creams (A&D and Desitin), some baby shampoo, baby wash and lotion. Stroller would be nice and I don't know what she has but she will need toys, blocks, dolls, pretend kitchen stuff, developmental toys. She what she likes to do and go from there. You may want a baby monitor, but you probably won't need it. She is probably walking or soon will be so you will want to have nice big areas for her to practice on and you will want her to wear shoes with rubber soles or socks with rubber grippers in places like the kitchen so she doesn't slip. You will need some tippy cups (maybe some bottles if she is still using bottles), and lots of plastic bowls, plates and utensils. Those are the basics, everything else will make itself known. Best wishes.

So many things to get and do for babies, and so little time. I agree with the former answer. You NEED to get safety outlet covers, Safety door covers, Safety electronics covers (so they can't touch the buttons or stuff goey things in your DVD, Stereo, Game Player, ect...), safety cabinet locks and safety drawer latches. It will save alot of heartache because she will want to explore everything.
The second most important thing you need to get is enough diapers to last for at least 2 weeks, buy a couple of the huge packs or buy in bulk at Costco/Sams Club. You really don't want to have to keep rushing to the store to buy diapers, it's a hassle that is easily eliminated.
The third most important thing to get is baby over the counter medicine. You need tylenol drops(or store brand), band aids, bacitracin, gas drops, multi-symptom cold medicine, and plenty of butt paste(the best brand out of all the diaper rash medicines).
You'll want to make sure she has a few age appropriate baby food choices of meat, veggies and fruit, so that you can see what she likes. Gentle hyperallergenic or baby soap with soft wash cloths. You can buy two different nipples, and 3 bottles. If you get a pack n play crib, you can double duty as a corral for when you need to do something that requires your full attention and as nap/sleep bed.(this can be cheaply bought at second hand childrens stores or thriftstores like the salvation army and goodwill. Tons of socks! A pair of little shoes and a pair of sandals. Plenty of onesies that can double duty as jammies for a few 18th month old and a few that are the next size up(she will grow into them fast) and a few durable outfits, until you can properly take her out shopping(jumpers and soft loose dresses are a safe bet).
Hopefully, since you have a young toddler, you will have sippy cups, baby gates and crib sheets and crib blankets.
As far as I am concerned, other than that - the only other things you need, you already have in spades for free... Compassion, Care, Attention and Love. I hope this answer helps you. Take good care and blessed be!

Clothing, diapers, shoes, bottles, sippy cups, bathing stuff, age appropriate toys, books, bed, linens, car seat, stroller, thermometer, meds for fever/pain, things for teething, electric socket covers, locks for cabinets and anything else she may not need to be, etc. child proofing materials to make her more safe and you more at ease.
I myself gained guardianship of my "friend's" four kids not to long ago and my child is 10..so I had to remember what all they needed. Still I remember things I have forgot about and have to pick them up. You are a great person and aunt for taking in your niece to care for her! Don't worry, it will all come back to you.

You're obviously very nervous about this addition to your family, but you're also an experienced Mom, and you really do remember what you need. Take a deep breath -- you'll be fine. A child needs a safe and comfortable place to sleep, the obvious clothing, shoes and diapers, a few toys (one to snuggle with), outerwear for winter, and YOU. The rest you'll figure out.
