Most dogs only go into heat 2 times a year. It happens about every 6 months. If the dog is spayed, they never go into heat.

4 How often does a dog go into heat?
A female dog will usually experience her first heat cycle between 6-12 months of age. After that time she will go back into heat approximately every 6 months. A dog in heat must be carefully monitored so she does not get loose and breed with another dog. If a dog is not going to be used for breeding she should be spayed. Not only will it help prevent unwanted litters of puppies, but it also helps decrease the chance of breast cancer and uterine diseases.

I asked my vet this question about 5 years ago when my female dog was just a puppy, and she said 1 to 4 times per year.
