Because when you file a paper return, you have to have the post office deliver from where you live to the IRS office for where you live, then they have to open it, and make sure that the return is signed, and then forward it onto the data entry dept at the IRS office, where the information is keyed in. Electronic filing shortens the time it takes to get the return from you to the IRS dramatically. And if you owe, whether you file the return by paper or electronically you still have till the deadline to pay. But if you are owed a refund, you will more than likely get your refund back faster by filing electronically.

Because actual people have to read it, handle it, and key the information in manually which amounts to more time processing ...With electronic filing, the handling and manual keying in of the return is eliminated, and the IRS either accepts the electronic return or rejects it, a process that takes just a few days. Most tax return preparation and filing software that is approved for IRS electronic filing finds any errors that could delay processing before the return even reaches the IRS for acceptance.

When they get a paper return they must "type" it into a computer. Before that can be done so the return must make it's way from the mail room to the sorting area. I would continue but I must take a Union required break. Now that I am back I must organize the tasks before me in accordance with the IRS regulations. However they were recently changed by Congress and I have not been trained so I must wait for the training. Do you get the idea. Next year e-file.

If yours was the only one they got on paper, it wouldn't take long - but they have huge piles of paper returns to deal with, and they all have to be entered into the IRS computers before they can be processed.

Believe me when I say that the IRS is slow with processing any type of information they receive be it by fax or mail. Im being audited for EITC and since they were slow in processing my fax it didnt get into the system and I was issued a 90 day letter of deficency. It takes them typically 45 days to review anything I send into their examiner dept. So I would consider yourself lucky that all your waiting for is your return and not an audit letter.

Logical assumption is that when everyone does their taxes at a period during the year it takes time to process x amount of forms in x amount of time considering that the IRS has to verify lots of data it can take days if not weeks. Other wise, I am not sure.
