It's not like I would be topless - I recognize community standards, that's why I'm asking your opinion. I would be otherwise "conservatively" dressed, e.g. -long shorts or blue jeans.....

Thanks for your opinions so far - for me it is a matter of comfort - plus I would like working on my tan (though we all have to be careful and put on sunscreen - my boyfriend is SO stubborn about this, even when I offer to put it on him!). Also, I don't think I would be being immodest. I am a fit woman of twenty-three, very health conscious and proud of my body.

Absolutely! Guys posting in my favorite Group (see below) frequently complain about theme parks, gyms, etc., that require them to wear shirts while women get by w/ bikini tops. The reverse--a woman in a swimsuit top w/ a legitimately shirtless man--seems gloriously fair!
As for getting sunscreen onto your BF, consider using this line next time he balks:

i think it depends on the sport in football on a hot day sure it would be fine but at a base ball game the code is a bit tighter so a tanktop might be the limit a bathing suit top is acceptable depending on the setting.
