Hmmm... I often heard that good hair-combing habits will keep your hair nice and shiny. Well, now I have short hair myself, thus, I don't really comb my hair, come to think of it, I think that my hair is rather dull, but it is very strong! I've tried some of these methods when I used to have longer hair. Maybe it will help you!
Maybe you should try this: use a shampoo that is suitable for your scalp condition ie. oily, normal, dry etc. Also take note of how your hair feels after shampooing, it is a very good fit if your hair feels soft after the 1st shampoo! Use also conditioner. I think that Herbal Essence does have good conditioners. Try the colour protect conditioner, it really makes your hair a silky feeling (not a greasy or an uneasy feeling) after the rinse. You can use the colour-protect conditioner even if you do not have dyed hair, it just give you a very good protection for your hair! After shampooing and applying conditioner, you can use some leave-on conditioner or use keratin mist. Keratin is a kind of protein, our hair is made up of protein, so using the mist help to repair the hair. I think, you've gotta comb them regularly and keep the heat low onthe hair dryer, use the air to blow dry your hair, use heat if you wanna curl your hari.

To make my hair shiny I use Kerastase shampoo and conditioner, and when I'm washing my hair I don't use very warm water. Sometimes I mix an egg in with the conditioner because that makes it super shiny. I also use Hot 6 Oil (the cheapest brand is African Pride) and just rub it through my hair before shampooing. The results are amazing and cheap!

In order to make your hair shiny the cuticles on the hair shaft need to lie flat. Suave Green Apple Shampoo and conditioner work well, but the best thing to do for shine is to rolller set your hair after it's damp dried.
