Do you think there is a magic prayer that will save me? Can I just ask Jesus to come into my heart and live like I want to? Do we have to repent and turn from our sins to be saved?

Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. (1 John 2:3-6)

I believe salvation is a gift and we need to come to God with a heart of repentence and take the gift. Ephesians 2 8-9, Titus 3:5, and Romans 6:23 If we are truely sorry are action will show it.

Sin and the Child of God
4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. 5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.
7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
(1 John 3:4-9)

Many Christians (although they will deny it) have a faith that is essentially that. This is largely based on a misreading of Paul's references to "works of the Law", and an exclusive focus on the realized eschatology of the Gospel of John. The former says we are not saved by "works of the Law", but the context makes it clear that this is not about "good deeds" but about circumcision and other practices that separated Jews from Gentiles. Romans 2 and Galatians 5 are among the passages that show that even Paul felt living a certain way was essential. The Gospel of John coped with the failure of the return of Jesus (expected to happen within the lifetime of his contemporaries) by moving the things expected in the future into the present, so that judgment and eternal life are no longer things awaited in the future but present realities.
The overall emphasis of the New Testament, however, if like that of the Old Testament, namely that how we live - matters of justice, treatment of the poor, and so on - matter to God, and merely believing certain things to be true will not save, as James explicitly points out.

Yes, you have to repent. No doubt about it. Even after you do this and ask the Lord to come into your heart, you will still sin. We don't need a license to sin, we were all born sinners, and getting saved only makes us saved sinners. We will sin until we die, there's no way out of that. The only difference is that after we're saved, the sins we commit will be forgiven. If we are counting on our good deeds to be saved, then none of us will make it. Even Paul said, "My righteousness is as filthy rags." Sometimes I wonder why God would even bother with me. I suppose if I ever get to the point that I don't wonder that, I should begin to worry.

An elephant acts like an elephant. A Christian is a new creature and acts like it. We are not under the law since we don't need it to live a holy life. We have been born again. Your question would indicate you believe in law keeping for salvation. "the law is for the lawless". Is a Christian still lawless?

A prayer is not magic. It is between you and God. No, you cannot ask Jesus into your heart and live like you want to. Yes, you must repent. That is exactly how. If you do these things and stay obedient, you will spend eternity in heaven when you die!

Jesus was the cash that God used to bail us out of sin and this fallen world because He loves us. We are born sinners we don't need a license

In Romans chapter 6 it says:
Do we keep on sinning, so that sin may abound?
The answer to this is of course "No"
Since we have died to sin, how can we carry on living in it?
Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ by baptism, we joined Him in death? For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may have new lives.
We know that our old sinful nature were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.

Yes, we must repent and turn from our sins to be saved, If your life hasn't changed dramatically then I don't think it was the creator of the universe who came to dwell in your heart.
