I just bought a 1080p mitsubishi 65 in. DLP. I love it and it works great. I have been told there is no reason to buy a upconverting DVD player because my digital TV does it already. I just bought a surround sound system that happened to have a DVD player that upconverts. The sales person told me to leave it "off" because the TV already "upconverts it." What do you think?

Your sales person is correct. Your TV already upconverts and there is no reason to scale in both the player and the TV.
However, you have nothing to lose by trying you player at both 480i, 480p, and 1080i/p and see by yourself which does a better job.
