I have never liked the AR-15 but I believe Armalite makes a superior version. I prefer the Ruger Mini-14.
I don't like the open bolt rifles. The closed bolt action on the Mini-14 seems superior in that external debris is much less of a problem and upon firing you don't have all that mass flying forward when you pull the trigger.
I even like the M1 carbine better but the .30 cal carbine round is a little anemic.
